We have started a new year and begun
preparations for whatever the FAA
releases in the Notice of Proposed
Rulemaking (NPRM). Stay tuned to the
AMA website so you can be kept up-todate
on the situation.
I have been traveling to different clubs
in the district and although I have been
to many, I have not been to many,
many more. I hope this year to spend
every weekend at a different club so
that I can meet all of the great modelers
of this district!
Douglas R. Gerdes has sent in this
report from Macon, Georgia!
“The Dixie Aeromasters Radio
Control Aircraft Club of Macon,
Georgia, hosted a fly-in to benefit the
U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for
Tots program on Saturday, November
19, 2011.
“Forty-one pilots from across the
Southeast registered for the event and
a large crowd of spectators attended.
The noon demonstration flights were
performed by world-class RC pilots
with fantastic machines and we
appreciate their efforts.
“Pilot registration fees, food, drink,
and raffle ticket sales allowed the Dixie
Aeromasters to donate $1,700 plus two
large boxes of toys and one bicycle to
the Toys for Tots program. The money
and toys collected will go a long way
in helping the USMC bring smiles to
the faces of needy children in middle
Georgia this Christmas.
“The Dixie Aeromasters would like
to thank all those who came out to
support this event and all the residents
of Gray, Georgia, and the Jones County
Commissioners for their continued
support.”
Don Ogren sent this report!
“The Spring Hill modelers enjoy a bit
of flying in the Timber Pines Performing
Art Center’s high-ceiling facility once
a month, year around. Models include
indoor RC and rubber-powered No-Cal
types. The two-hour sessions usually
result in a few ‘wall bangers’ and ‘ceiling
pushers.’ Midairs are rare. Several
helicopters are flown regularly.
“We don’t have a club, and we invite
all who are interested, although most
are members of the Hernando County
RC Club of Spring Hill, Florida.”
The Remote Control Association of
Central Florida (RCACF) had an event
recognizing Don Lowe’s lifelong love of
aviation. Don is known as “The Legend”
and the event, called Fly with the
Legend, was well attended.
Don gave us a summary of all of the
innovations he worked on with UAVs,
as they were called back in the day,
when he pioneered much of what is
common today, and we all flew all day
with The Legend himself.
Don is a past AMA president and
a mover and shaker in the hobby.
Although getting up in years, he still
comes out nearly every day to get a
flight in, help someone out, or just chat
with other modelers. We are blessed
to have him around to keep us flying
straight!
