42nd Southeastern Model Show (Perry, Georgia)

  • Date: February 28–March 2, 2014
  • Location: Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter, Perry, Georgia
  • Tables rented: Approximately 1,016
  • Vendors: Roughly 300
  • Attendance: About 2,700 people, including 32 registered pilots

The weather was great—sunny skies and fairly warm conditions. There was a big influx of electric-powered models of all types, especially micro quadcopters. By Saturday afternoon, they were hard to find.

I saw many familiar faces and many new ones. On Friday night, District V Vice President (VP) Kris Dixon met with all of the AVPs, AMA President Bob Brown, and AMA Executive Director Dave Mathewson. Kris gave a thorough presentation to the AVPs on the many services AMA offers and our responsibilities. The meeting included an introduction by Bob Brown and a presentation by Dave Mathewson.

The AMA flight-simulator trailer was at the event this year and was a big hit with the kids. This year’s SMS was dedicated to Norm Deputy, who had hosted the SMS since 1999 and passed away last year.

We all look forward to another great SMS in 2015. Hope to see you there!

First in the South Electric Fly-In Festival (San Antonio, Florida)

Terry McKienzie submitted a report and photos about the First in the South Electric Fly-In Festival.

  • Host: Can-Am Flyers club, Zephyrhills, Florida
  • Date: January 17–19, 2014
  • Location: Club field in San Antonio, Florida

The first day of the festival was a beautiful day for flying, but cool air moved in on Saturday. Overall, it was a great weekend for a great club. Thanks to the Can-Am Flyers club for all it does for our hobby!
