District V Report - 2007/11
Jamborees and fall flying
It is still quite warm here in Georgia in early September as I write this, but fall is coming and with it some much-needed cooler weather for great flying!
Our fourth and final Jamboree is in a couple of weeks and I am eager to attend. Of course, it will be November when you read this and the event will be over. Look for pictures in the December issue.
If this Jamboree goes as the first three have, it will be well attended and very much fun. We have been blessed with good weather and great flying, and I am sure the club will be ready and eager.
After this event, I will be reviewing the year and determining what my plans will be for Jamborees in 2008 (if I am re-elected, that is!). The response from virtually everyone who has attended one of these events has been wonderful. The fellowship, food, and the T-shirts were a big hit, and everyone seemed to enjoy seeing all the different types of models flown. This was exactly what I wanted to accomplish, and I want to thank all of the clubs that hosted the events for 2007.
AMA elections and membership voting
The heat of the summer months slows things down a bit here in the Southeast, so I am going to take the opportunity to share some of the things going on at AMA. This fall, you will be receiving your ballot in the mail. This year, not only are the members of District V voting for a district vice president, this is the year that the entire membership will be electing a new AMA president.
Dave Brown, longtime AMA president, has decided to step down and not run for another term. Dave has served AMA and the membership well, always doing what he thought was best for AMA and the membership. While I didn't always agree with him, I greatly respect his commitment to the Academy and the membership over these many years.
You have a choice to make concerning whom you want as president for the next three years. I suggest you do some homework, see who is running, and make an informed decision when the time comes. Please vote! It is terrible to see that only 15–20% of the eligible membership actually casts a ballot. We should do better. I challenge everyone to take the time to vote this fall.
West Alabama Aeromodelers site
I am going to leave you with pictures of a new flying site being built at the West Alabama Aeromodelers field. It is really going to be great, and I hope to be in attendance when it is dedicated. The club is shooting for a "first fly day" in October.
