176 MODEL AVIATION
I ATTENDED the Vintage R/C Society’s
annual fly-in/contest in Dunnellon, Florida,
March 8-9. Actually, the winds were so
high on Saturday, that the event was
canceled for the day, and we met on
Sunday for a few hours.
While the weather scared off many,
several brave souls stuck it out and flew. It
was great seeing some of the old models
being flown again. Somehow, seeing an
Andrews Trainermaster in the air, being
powered by a glow engine using castor oil
just does something to your senses. It really
takes you back in time for a moment.
I am sure that is exactly the draw that
these guys enjoy when they build and fly
these models! Enjoy the pictures!
Our annual trek to the Southeastern
Model Show occurred this year on Leap
Year Day: February 29. The show was
bigger and better than ever!
Dave Mathewson, AMA president,
attended along with Bliss Teague, District
IV vice president (VP), and Jim Cherry,
AMA’s executive director.
The main event for us was the District
V associate vice president (AVP) training
session that was held at noon on Saturday.
We had a great turnout of eight AVPs in
attendance! Excellent!
Several items were discussed as we
reviewed some new programs and policies
so that the AVPs could take this
information back to their local clubs and
pass it along. I believe this is a terrific way
to get information to the local level, and
our AVPs are doing a good job of that.
Have you seen had a chance to speak to
your local AVP? You might want to check
out the listing and contact the one closest to
you to see when he might be in your area.

William E. “Bill” Norman of Hoover,
Alabama, passed away on February 7
surrounded by his family. He was just 61.
Bill served his country proudly as a
member of the U.S. Marine Corps in
Vietnam, as a Crew Chief on C-117 aircraft.
He worked at Homewood Toy and Hobby
for more than 35 years. Bill was devoted to,
and contributed much to the hobby of flying
RC.
It would be impossible to count the
number of people that Bill taught to fly RC.
He always was eager to share his vast
knowledge of the hobby he loved so much
with anyone who asked.
Bill was a lifetime member of the Bama
Fliers. He was a very meticulous builder,
and he used to fly pattern aircraft
competitively. Bill also had a passion for
flying CL in recent years especially.
Always quick with a smile, he seldom
met a stranger. The hobby has lost a very
fine modeler, and a tireless advocate. All
who knew him will miss him a great deal.
Fair winds, Bill.
