District V Report - 2010/06

FLAGLER COUNTY

Radio Aero Modelers (RAMS) Cub Scout Day. I drove down and attended the Flagler RAMS club Cub Scout Day at the club’s flying site in Palm Coast, Florida.

The RAMS club has a strong working relationship with county administrators and continues to collaborate with them. They occasionally host county commissioners, who have all enjoyed some RC stick time with club members.

Great job, guys! I wish every club in District V would recognize the advantage of having local officials on their side.

When I arrived the skies were clear, but the wind was going to be a problem for the club trainer, a Senior Telemaster. Club members had met with the Cub Scout troop the night before, and the kids were really excited about flying.

The winds made it almost impossible to keep the trainer aloft, but several kids did get stick time before a gust ripped the wing from the fuselage, resulting in a crash. That was exciting for the kids, but it also meant the end of the day’s flying. The club plans to reschedule the program with another trainer soon.

This group of modelers really enjoys what they do and works well together. They made everyone feel at home, and I enjoyed meeting and talking with many of the club members. If you are in the area, the RAMS club would be happy to have you fly with them.

Ocala Model Flying Club Pattern Contest

I attended the annual Ocala spring Pattern contest in March. This event is eagerly anticipated by the RC Pattern community every year. The weather started out chilly on Saturday morning but became a very nice flying day by noon.

The Ocala club is very active and hosts many events throughout the year. If you are in the area, check the club website and make it out to the field. It’s a very nice site with a great grass runway.

Check the club’s event schedule and plan to visit during the next event—a great flying site makes for a great day at the field.
