The weather wasn't my original choice to begin this month's column, but the beautiful stretch of days we've had in March in most parts of the district deserved some mention. Where I live, in southeast Michigan, we had a string of 70° and 80° days that lasted nearly two weeks. I hope you had a chance to get out to the field and get some flying in. It was a welcome relief from being holed up in the shop all winter.
I'm pleased to announce the appointment of three new associate vice presidents to the district:
- Bob Johnson — Fond du Lac
- Bruce Baier — Oshkosh (will be taking over in Wisconsin for Tom Ryan)
- Noel Hunt — Shelby Township, Michigan (will assume the responsibilities of Tom Pierce)
All three bring considerable modeling experience to the table and will be positive additions to our district. Please join me in wishing them all the best in their new positions. Also, I want to thank Tom Ryan and Tom Pierce for their service to the district and the Academy.
The following photos come from the indoor flying at the Ultimate Soccer Arena in Pontiac, Michigan, organized by the Skymasters R/C Club and in conjunction with several other area clubs. The season runs from the start of November through the end of March. The arena sessions regularly draw more than 80 pilots.
Had I not witnessed it for myself, you would have had a hard time convincing me you could get that many people to show up in the dead of winter on Tuesday afternoons. If you build it, they will come. I think I remember hearing that said somewhere.
Take a kid flying.
