District VI - 2015/06

Author: Randy Cameron

Edition: Model Aviation - 2015/06
Page Numbers: 138

It has been another fast month. We’ve
sprung ahead into daylight saving
time and are past the equinox, so the
days are starting to get longer. We are
getting back into the flying season. I
hope you have a couple of new or old
models to fly and are taking them out
to enjoy the warmer weather.
I’ve recently had reports of a couple
of incidents where people have been
severely hurt from getting their hands
in the way of spinning propellers. This
has occurred with both electric and
fueled aircraft.
I know I am preaching to the
choir, but I probably can’t say it
enough. Please be safe. Use restraints
when starting airplanes. Program
and get used to using throttle locks
on your transmitters when possible
on electric-powered aircraft. Take
the propellers off the airplane when
setting up electric models.
I truly hate seeing and hearing
about friends and fellow modelers
getting hurt. I’ve said it before, if you
see someone getting ready to start
an airplane, offer him or her a hand.
Hold the airplane for starting and
running up the engine and carry it to
the runway. Offer to spot if needed.
It’s also a great way to start a new
friendship, as well as help a fellow
modeler.
The following event report was
submitted by Andy Kerwin.
The Aurora Barnstormers R/C Club
in Illinois conducted Intro to RC
Flying at the Public Library of North
Aurora on March 21, 2015.
The event consisted of a PowerPoint
presentation with a question-andanswer
session, a static display
of a variety of aircraft (airplanes,
helicopters, and quadcopters),
and three flight simulators set up
for a hands-on experience for the
public. There were 30 spectators in
attendance and several club members
present to display their aircraft and
assist the newcomers on the flight
simulators, which proved popular.
Club members at the event were
Andy Kerwin, Kevin Ross, Ron
Dickenson, Jack Eckstorm, Mark
Kosko, Mark Willames, Gary Koester,
Roger Spurgin, and Ralph Dieterich.
All photos were taken by club
member Ron Dickenson.
