PEKIN IL: The Pekin Radio Control (RC)
Club held its 23rd Big Bird Fly-in at the
Pekin Park District. There were roughly 25
fliers and approximately 200 spectators in
attendance. What was unique about the flyin
was that it had television publicity. An
award-winning program, Postcard, was
broadcast on local channel 25.
The club was able to attract the station
by showing them copies of two AMA
video tapes, All Because of Model
Airplanes, and Model Airplane Flying
Sites in State Parks. These two tapes were
used as a base example for the TV
presentation entitled A Field of Dreams.
This program was broadcast to an audience
of approximately 600,000 viewers in
central Illinois on two separate days in
conjunction with the noon, six o’clock, and
ten o’clock news.
The Pekin club, along with two other
area clubs, Peoria R/C Club, and the
Summit Valley RC Flyers, has worked
with the AMA Lincolnland Models Air
Show Team to promote model aviation in a
variety ways across central Illinois.
This is an example what working
together can do to further our sport. Jim
