District VI Report - 2004/08
There are 260 clubs in District VI, yet I have received information for this column from only approximately 25 of those clubs. Do you want your club showcased in the column? If so, send pictures (black-and-white or color prints) with accompanying text. Sometime in the future it will appear in this column.
Highland, Illinois
The Sport Flyers RC Club came to the rescue when the Science Olympiad regional at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville was canceled. When Earl Brockmeier and Albert Zimmer heard this, they decided to hold a fun-fly for the students because it was not fair that they had spent so much time on the event and then did not get a chance to fly their models.
Roy White and Gene Joshu of Y2K Film donated cash to be used as prizes. Ms. Hickey, assistant principal of the Upper Elementary School in Highland, helped clear the date with the school administration. The 12 participating schools were notified in writing. Eight members of the Sport Flyers hosted the event.
Middle-school winners:
- First place: Alex Knebel, St. Rose Middle School
- Second place: Amy Essenpreis, St. Rose Middle School
- Third place: Michael Trobough, Highland Middle School
High-school winner:
- Kris Kerwin, Ursuline Academy, Springfield
This shows what a club can do to step up and help the youth of today. Thanks to Al Zimmer for sending this information.
Saint Louis, Missouri
The Thermaleers and SAM NX-211 clubs participated in the Schifko 71, a one-design club contest. Back in the 1960s, club member John Schifko designed a hand-launch glider. In recognition of John’s service and his 71st birthday, the clubs held a contest for his design converted to a catapult glider.
The weather was great, and John gave himself a present — he bested the other 18 entries! Thanks to Robert Klipp for the pictures and information.
Lexington, Kentucky
The Lexington Model Airplane Club was invited to participate in a four-day event: the 2004 Lexington Sport and Boat Show at Heritage Hall and Rupp Arena. John Royalty and his committee did a great job of getting the word out to club members, who responded with 67 models of all types.
There was also a booth set up by our Kentucky-area associate vice president (AVP), Lew McFarland, where visitors could look at kits and accessories. The club maintained an information booth where AMA literature and information were made available.
Thanks to Al Schroeder, the club’s publicity chairperson, for sending the information and pictures.
