NOTICE: At the top of the column you will
see two new officers for the district:
Frequency Coordinator Julian Pugh, and
Safety Coordinator Walter Voyt. Many
thanks to both for stepping up to give
service to the AMA.
Evansville, Indiana: The Evansville Radio
Control Model Airplane Club hosted this
year’s Grand Event. Frank Roales, associate
vice president in Indiana, sent in the
following report:
“Attendance for this year’s Grand Event
in the Evansville, Indiana, area was
somewhere between 3,500 and 4,000 people.
There were 825 buddy-box flights given
in the course of the two-and-a-half days. All
the time the flightlines were open, four flight
stations were used. This was increased to
five flight stations during one period.
“Nine Sig LT-40s put in 275 flights with
not even a broken propeller. Steve Bufkin,
chairperson for the event, did a fantastic
job. Members of seven area clubs showed
up to help the Evansville club.”
The hourly raffle drawings were a crowd
favorite. Everything from models and local
restaurant certificates to an hour of aerial
sightseeing over Evansville was donated
as prizes.
Talk about being a hard core flier, David
Hale and Janet were married at 2 p.m. and
by 4:30 they were at the field to get
insome buddy-box time and bring some
wedding cake out to the workers.
Step 1 in new-flier orientation was
familiarization training: learning just what
those funny little sticks on the radio
actually do, and how it affects the
airplane.
Next the students went to a computer
simulator to get an idea of what they were
going to be looking at when their turn
came for actual flight.
The boat pond was an attraction all three
days with most of the aspiring RIC’s
enjoying their first hands-on experience.
Another hit, especially with the younger
crowd, was the RIC car track. Some of the
cars spent more time being put back on
the track than they did actually running.
That left/right thing when it’s coming at
you can be a bear!
The rocket assembly tent was full almost
all the time. It was a big hit with the kids to
be able to put one together, actually
launch it, and then get to take it home.
A view of the south end of the flightline
just before the demonstraton shows this
fine facility. Take note of the permanent
structures, safety fences, and the
concrete runway.
The north end of the flying area behind
the flightline had a static model display.
The striped tent in the background was for
vendors and the two inflatable things were
a moon walk and slide that were always
full of the youngest attendees.
Two experienced modelers, Dick Brown
(L) and Bill Kleinhans (AMA 101), recall
memories from the 1940s when they flew
CL together.
