The Propmasters R/C Aero Club made a little history by beating its archrival, the Suburban RC Barnstormers of Bloomingdale, Illinois, in an annual intraclub fun-fly event.
This year's fun-fly contest was called "Simulated Medical Supply Drop" and was held at the Barnstormers' Pratt's Wayne Woods field in DuPage County, Illinois. Twenty-four pilots participated in the competition, split evenly between the two clubs.
In this competition, a small metal washer with an attached ribbon is released from a model while in flight. The metal washer's distance to a target is measured. The five closest washers dropped by the Propmasters averaged 9 feet from the target, while the Barnstormers' average was 12 feet.
This is the first time in 14 consecutive years of competition that the Propmasters have beaten the Barnstormers. Some members of the Propmasters have been club members for more than 14 years and cannot remember ever beating the Barnstormers and having the winning prize: an engraved trophy in the club's possession for a year.
Larry Dudkowski explained the rules for the day's competition.
After the fun-fly, both clubs enjoyed hot dogs, bratwurst, stories, and flying together for the rest of the day. Rumor has it that the Barnstormers are practicing and planning to win the trophy back.
