AMA MEMBER Walt Keating E-mailed
me and pointed out that I had misnamed the
twin-engine model pictured in my January
2006 column. Walt pointed out that it is the
Wing Derringer not Winged Derringer. Walt
also informed me that he had an opportunity
to fly the full-scale airplane.
The mistake was a typo on my part and it
slipped by. I hope this will correct the issue.
My thanks to Mr. Keating for being so
observant.
In my columns I have ended at times with
“introduce a youngster to our hobby.” I’ve
done this for the simple reason that in order
to have our hobby continue, we have to let
people know about it. And what better way
than to get the youngsters involved?
During my tenure as vice president, I am
occasionally asked what AMA is doing to
get more youngsters involved. Well! Who is
the AMA? Fifty-eight people at
Headquarters? The AMA president and all
of the district vice presidents?
Not hardly. It’s all of us—the
membership, the Headquarters staff, and the
Executive Council combined. We all have to
do our part to create awareness of our
hobby/sport. The following is a prime
example of what can be done with a little
effort.
Jim Rasmussen, secretary of the Mid-State
Aeroguidence Club of Marshfield,
Wisconsin, sent me this information. Dan
Crump, vice president of the club, has
featured a program for the middle schools of
Marshfield as an annual event.
Recently the club hosted 11 youngsters
along with their teachers and a few parents.
The program introduces model aeronautics
to the youngsters and allows them the
opportunity to experience first-hand the
feeling we all get in flying our models.
An example how the youngsters feel is
the following quote “this is the best day of
my life.” The pictures tell the rest of the
story.

Until next time, fly safely, have fun, and
introduce a youngster to the hobby.
