District VII - 2006/07

I have been asked many times during my tenure as your representative to the AMA Executive Council why this club or that club is never mentioned. This is not a difficult question to answer.

Since I can't be in two places at the same time, I must rely on the clubs and associate vice presidents (AVPs) to submit articles that may be of interest to other clubs and members. Our district has AVPs that can be contacted by clubs as well. Their names can be found on the district website, the AMA website, or in this column header:

The District VII website was established specifically for the clubs and the membership of District VII as a vehicle to transmit information concerning events, how-to questions, and many other areas. The website is also an area that is not being used as effectively as it could be. I have visited club websites and have seen great pictures and write-ups about events that would be of interest to others. These same clubs have posted information on major sites as well, but not sent in material for the district column in your magazine. It's not rocket science—if you want bragging rights for your club, send the material to me and I'll take it from there. If you have any questions about what or how, just ask.

District Fun-Fly

Some time ago an attempt was made to generate interest in getting more modelers together for plain fun flying. All too often it seems that modelers don't get past their own field boundaries. Whether it's because of competition events or other factors is immaterial. We are supposed to be united in our hobby/sport and to be able to enjoy the camaraderie.

After asking many questions, one club—the Radio Control Club of Detroit (RCCD)—has come forward to join me in producing the first District VII Fun-Fly. This is open to all AMA members for the express purpose of getting together to have fun flying. A meeting was set up at the Toledo Expo to discuss when, where, and how to accomplish this event. It will not be an easy task, but I was assured by club president Ernie Varilone that he had the full support of the club and it would be done. Two weeks later the flyer was in my hands.

The plan is to have an event of this type—a traveling event—to be held in Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota in the future. The success will depend on just how many attend. It can be a real blast or a dud. It all depends on you, the members. The membership of RCCD has stepped up to the plate to accept the responsibility to carry this out. It's up to the rest of us to make it a fun time.

The dates are July 29–30, 2006. For more information, visit the website www.rccd.org. Get involved. Introduce someone to our hobby-sport and I'll see you at the field!
