District VII - 2006/08

THERE WAS an error regarding the people
in a picture in my column in the In the June
2006 issue of MA. The caption identified the
men in the photo as Wayne Yeager and John
Klotz. Sorry, it should have read Wayne
Yeager and Rick Lederman, codirector of
the Toledo Show. Sorry Rick.
The error was brought to my attention by
Gary Rexroad of Petersburg, Michigan.
Thanks Gary.
Another item that keeps surfacing is that
members are having trouble with who the
Flying Site Coordinator for District VII is.
Although it is listed on the Flying Site
Assistance page, I’ll list it here as well.
The current coordinator is Joe Beshar
and he has been in that position for some
time. Please contact Joe at the address listed
on the Flying Site Assistance page on page
151 of this issue.
I am writing this in May and by the time
you get this issue, half the flying season will
be over in our district. I have made my
travel plans for the summer and hopefully
the weather will cooperate. We just finished
with 11 straight days of rain. Yuck!
Someone once said, “Necessity is the
mother of invention.” In our hobby/sport it
certainly is true and here is a perfect
example of that.
Ken Stroble of Lansing, Michigan, sent
in these shots of a CL chair. It was designed
and built by Bob Labadie of the Flying Aces
Club. In his report Ken mentioned that Bob
would get dizzy while flying his CL aircraft.
Bob is an ardent CL flier and wasn’t
going to let that stop him from flying, so the
idea came to him about sitting and letting
the airplane pull him around. I have not
seen the chair in operation so I can’t
comment on it.
I suggest that if anyone is interested,
contact Bob Labadie at the Flying Aces
Club in Lansing, Michigan. The address can
be found on the AMA Web site under
chartered clubs, District VII at
www.modelaircraft.org/subsec7.asp.
This is the chair before setup. It can be put
into a trunk of a car or a station wagon and
is lightweight.
Once on the ground, pull the handle up and
the bungee cord will come off. This a must
when flying.
Now sit back and ride the circle without
getting dizzy as Bob Labadie demonstrates
this while flying his Brodak Smoothie. Bob
has a smile on his face now since he no longer
gets dizzy. This would be great for people
who are wheelchair bound or for one who
gets dizzy after a couple turns in the circle.
A close-up of the chair shows where Bob
rests his feet.
I attended the second annual AMA general
membership meeting at the Joe Nall event. I
believe this was the largest turnout at a
membership meeting that I’ve seen.
President Dave Brown presided and
fielded myriad great questions from the
membership. Dave Mathewson, vice
president in District II, helped answer some
electric flyer questions. It appears this will
continue to be an annual meeting which I
feel is necessary.
Dont forget the AMA-sponsored fun-fly
July 29-30, 2006. For more information visit
the Radio Control Club of Detriot’s Web
site at www.rccd.org.
Till next time, fly smart, fly safely, and
have fun. Bring a youngster to the flying
site. C.A.V.U.
