District VII - 2006/08

Correction

There was an error regarding the people in a picture in my column in the June 2006 issue of MA. The caption identified the men in the photo as Wayne Yeager and John Klotz. It should have read Wayne Yeager and Rick Lederman, co-director of the Toledo Show. Sorry, Rick. The error was brought to my attention by Gary Rexroad of Petersburg, Michigan. Thanks, Gary.

Flying Site Coordinator

Another item that keeps surfacing is confusion over who the Flying Site Coordinator for District VII is. Although it is listed on the Flying Site Assistance page, I’ll list it here as well.

  • Current coordinator: Joe Beshar.
  • Please contact Joe at the address listed on the Flying Site Assistance page (page 151 of this issue).

Season update

I am writing this in May and, by the time you get this issue, half the flying season will be over in our district. I have made my travel plans for the summer and hopefully the weather will cooperate — we just finished with 11 straight days of rain. Yuck!

CL chair (necessity is the mother of invention)

Someone once said, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” In our hobby/sport it certainly is true, and here is a perfect example.

Ken Stroble of Lansing, Michigan, sent in photos of a CL chair designed and built by Bob Labadie of the Flying Aces Club. In his report Ken mentioned that Bob would get dizzy while flying his CL aircraft. Bob is an ardent CL flier and wasn't going to let that stop him from flying, so the idea came to him about sitting and letting the airplane pull him around. I have not seen the chair in operation so I can't comment on it.

If anyone is interested, contact Bob Labadie at the Flying Aces Club in Lansing, Michigan. The address can be found on the AMA website under Chartered Clubs, District VII: www.modelaircraft.org/subsec7.asp.

AMA general membership meeting

I attended the second annual AMA general membership meeting at the Joe Nall event. I believe this was the largest turnout at a membership meeting that I’ve seen. President Dave Brown presided and fielded myriad great questions from the membership. Dave Mathewson, Vice President in District II, helped answer some electric-flyer questions. It appears this will continue to be an annual meeting, which I feel is necessary.

Upcoming events

Don't forget the AMA-sponsored fun-fly July 29–30, 2006. For more information visit the Radio Control Club of Detroit’s website: www.rccd.org.

Till next time — fly smart, fly safely, and have fun. Bring a youngster to the flying site. C.A.V.U.
