District VII

As I wrote last month, this has been a great season.

Hall of Fame Presentation

I had the distinct honor of presenting Hardy Brodersen the Model Aviation Hall of Fame Award at the Detroit Balsa Bugs meeting in front of all of Hardy’s friends. Hardy has been an AMA member since 1936 and was deeply involved in helping to set up the National Free Flight Society.

Hardy’s accomplishments include:

  • AMA member since 1936
  • Helped establish the National Free Flight Society
  • Served as AMA vice president (multiple terms)
  • Recipient of the AMA Meritorious Award
  • Contest director (CD) since 1972
  • Author and inventor
  • Placed in many Free Flight contests, including the Nationals

It was truly an honor and a pleasure to present Hardy Brodersen with the Model Aviation Hall of Fame Award.

Middle School Aeromodeling Program

Richard Streetman, assistant principal of Boulan Park Middle School in Troy, Michigan, and a member of the Hamburg Flyers R/C Club, sent in the next report. This is an example of how clubs can get youngsters involved.

This is the fifth year the middle school has offered students the opportunity to get involved with aeromodeling. At present, 30 youngsters have built their own airplanes, have soloed, and have become AMA members. The pictures tell the story.

  • Dave Keats assists eighth-grader Matt Demarco.
  • Matt Gebara gets flight instruction as Eric Elinski flies solo.
  • Richard Streetman’s office doubles as a hangar.

How about some of you grandparents getting your grandchildren involved? You just might have a ball.

Fly safely and have fun. C.A.V.U.
