District VII
I have to presume that most, if not all, District VII members are flying their latest creations by the time you get this issue.
As you know, I have to write my column nearly two months before you see it because of our publishing schedule. It would be great if we could do it sooner, but it just isn't possible.
In the meantime, it's mid‑May and cold. I am not a happy camper about that. Toledo is behind us and it's time to enjoy our hobby/sport.
United Flying Organization (UFO) — Highland, Michigan
Tony Madaffer, secretary of the United Flying Organization (UFO) of Highland, Michigan, sent in this report.
The Oakland–Pontiac Airport held an open house and invited the UFO group to put on a static and flying demonstration for the public. The club also held a 50/50 raffle and raffled off a model aircraft. The event was well attended.
Demo pilots included:
- Vic Kerstner
- Chris Tucker
- Gary Weaks (flying the warbirds)
- Chris Chene (3‑D flying; barefoot), with Bill Chene acting as spotter
Nice job, Tony.
Kent Radio Aeromodelers (KRAMS)
Larry Brannan, District VII associate vice president and a member of the Kent Radio Aeromodelers (KRAMS) club, forwarded some pictures showing what the club does in working with the community.
This kind of community relations gives back and also solidifies the club's position within the community; it also introduces youngsters to the wonderful world of aeromodeling.
This is the kind of commitment that is needed in order for our hobby to grow and perpetuate. I keep preaching that we, the current membership, have to get involved—no, make that must get involved. This is what it is all about.
These reports are great examples of what can be done with a little effort. The dividends are that our hobby will continue after we are gone.
Think about how much fun you have had enjoying the hobby/sport. Don't be selfish. Pass it on.
Till next time, fly safely, have fun, and get a youngster involved. C.A.V.U.
