IN THE JULY issue of MA, I sent out a
request for anyone with a graphics and/or
publishing background who would be
interested in volunteering for a committee. I
was surprised by the responses I received.
I’m pleased to announce that the position
has been filled.
I am also pleased that my constant
comments regarding getting youngsters
involved in our great hobby seems to be
making some headway.
A family fun day event was held at the
Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA)
AirVenture Museum in Oshkosh,
Wisconsin. The Northern Aces Air Show
Team and the Winnebago RC club, along
with a number of modelers from other clubs,
gathered to introduce our hobby to
youngsters and their families.
They flew rubber and electric airplanes
in the Eagle hangar among aircraft including
a full-scale Spitfire, Bearcat, and a de
Havilland Mosquito. Also in the hangar was
supposedly the only surviving A-36 North
American Mustang in the US.
I’ll let the photos submitted by Bill
Lund, team manager for the Northern Aces
Air Show Team, tell the story.
Mike Haller assists a youngster on the
simulator.
Terry Edmonds sent some pictures of the
Eastern Iowa Soaring Society’s (EISS) 2008
Misty Meadows Soaring Contest in Solon,
Iowa. Terry said there were contestants from
Illinois, Wisconsin, and of course Iowa.
EISS holds two of these contests a
season.
This is a first-time submission for this
columnist. I know there is more action of
this type going on in District VII, but
nobody sends anything in. Thanks EISS!
Not to be outdone, Dick Streetman of the
Hamburg Flyers R/C club shows the club’s
involvement with the Boulan Park Middle
School in Troy, Michigan. Club member
Ray Piper of the Troy Police Department is
a flight instructor.
More community involvement!
That brings me to the end of the column.
Until next time, get involved. The
youngsters you see are our future in our
hobby/sport and country. What we do now
with them and for them will be our legacy.
