Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin

By the time you read this column, AMA District VII will have made history in May 2010. How was this accomplished? It was no simple task by any means.

Red Bull U.S. introduced a new program called Red Bull Air Brush, offering an opportunity to showcase young emerging local and international talent. Michigan middle schools were invited to be the first to participate in this contest.

It is certainly an honor for Michigan to be chosen. As I write this in early May, the contest will run until May 31, 2010, when the voting is scheduled to close.

The entrants' airplanes were on display in the Renaissance Center Wintergarden for viewing and voting. The winning school will receive a $6,000 donation to the school art department and an invitation to attend a party at the Red Bull Air Race in June.

The second-place entry will receive $2,500 and the third-place airplane will receive $1,500.

The results are not available as I write this, but I will post them in the next column. I have included a sampling of some of the airplanes:

  • Holy Redeemer Grade School, Detroit
  • Shumate Middle School, Gibraltar
  • Charlotte Mason Community School, Detroit
  • Antioch Baptist School, Warren
  • Birney Middle School, Southfield
  • Ann Arbor Academy, Ann Arbor
  • Gesu Catholic School, Detroit
  • Thompson Middle School, Southfield
  • University of Detroit Jesuit, seventh grade, Detroit
  • St. Bartholomew, Detroit
  • Plymouth Christian, Canton

Till next time, fly safely, have fun, and take a youngster to your flying site. C.A.V.U.
