District VII - 2011/02
Many times during my tenure as District VII vice president, I have written about clubs and members getting involved. I know that there are loads of members with a lot of spare time. What better way to be productive with that spare time than to devote some of it toward getting involved with youngsters.
Many of you have grandchildren, so you know what they require. Think about it and maybe after reading this next report you just might be inspired to do something.
The AMA has material to help you along; all you have to do is ask.
Thunderbird R/C Club — Comstock Elementary program
Here's what Fred Marion and the members of the Thunderbird R/C Club have done.
Fred and a few club members met with Comstock Elementary School's science teacher (now principal), Wes Seely, and proposed getting any youngsters who were interested in aviation to participate in a model-building project. The group meets on Wednesdays from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. So far, in the past four years, Fred and his group have put 60 youngsters through the program.
Comstock is located near Galesburg in the Kalamazoo, Michigan, area. Fred has also offered to help others if they have any questions about starting a similar project. Contact Fred through his e-mail address: [email protected].
I think the pictures tell it better. This is what it is all about. If Fred and the Thunderbird R/C Club can do it, so can a lot of others. Remember—a program such as this can be your legacy to the hobby that will live beyond you.
Till next time, get involved. You might just like it, and the payment is the look on the kids' faces when they see their creation actually fly. Have a hanky handy.
Fly safely and have fun. C.A.V.U.
