District VII Report - 2003/02

February 2003 157
THIS MONTH my column will feature a
collage of club events from the past year
(with the exception of the first print).
I had the honor of presenting the Model
Aviation Hall of Fame Award to Keith
Shaw of Ann Arbor, Michigan at the NEAT
(Northeast Electric Aircraft Technology)
Fair in Downsville, New York.
Ray Trindall sent in a little history of the
Fond du Lac Aeromodelers club.
He sent in a newspaper article about the
club being in existence since 1938 when it
was called the Fondy Aeronauts. The club
originally had roughly ten members. The
name was later changed to the Fond du Lac
Aeromodelers.
The new Fond du Lac field is called
Wellnitz Field in honor of the property
owner.
Ken Sulkowski of the Radio Control Club
of Detroit sent in this report.
Each year the club hosts a fly-in for a
local Cub Scout troop and county youth
home to introduce youngsters to
aeromodeling. I have mentioned more than
once in this column about community
involvement.
These two shots are good examples of
what a club can do. Great job, guys!
The following print shows that
aeromodeling has no age barriers. Dick
Graham (78 years young) is shown with
his 72-inch-wingspan Liberty Sport getting
it ready for a flight.
Dick is a member of the Ottumwa Model
Flying Club of Ottumwa, Iowa.
Can you believe the Ottumwa club’s
clubhouse? Whew!
James Vanderwalker posted this
information and above photos from the
Shawano Big Bird fly-in. Jim reported
that they had a great turnout of pilots
and airplanes, and not even a broken
prop.
That’s it for another month. I’ll have more
for the March issue.
Until then, fly safely and introduce
someone to aeromodeling. C.A.V.U.
