District VII Report - 2003/05

Author: Bill Oberdieck

Edition: Model Aviation - 2003/05
Page Numbers: 151

HERE IT IS, another month, but this time
I have an important announcement. All
you Iowans, listen up!
First, I have a reminder that the Grand
Event is scheduled for June 6, 7, and 8,
2003. It will be held at Water Works Park
in Des Moines, Iowa.
The second announcement is that
finally after asking and searching for a
very long time, District VII has an
Associate Vice President (AVP) who lives
in Iowa. It is with great pleasure that I
introduce to District VII, Jon McVay. Jon
has accepted the position and will be the
Iowa contact.
Jon has been an aeromodeler for quite a
few years, involved in Free Flight (FF) and
Control Line. Jon has also participated at
the Nats and is no stranger to the winner’s
circle. He’s current interests are Electric,
FF Rubber power, and small Electrics.
Jon also spent time in the USAF as a
cryptographer. He is currently retired from
the Fluid Power Industry. His contact
information is to the left in the sidebar.
Welcome, Jon.
I would be remiss if I didn’t say how
pleased I am that Jon has accepted the
position of District VII AVP. There have
been countless calls asking when Iowa
would have a representative and now it has
come to fruition.
I have a report sent in by Brian
Goldammer, president of the Headwaters
Radio Control (RC) Flying Club of Park
Rapids, Minnesota. The club hosted a funfly
last August. This was their fourth
annual event that is strictly for fun.
Brian reported that they had 34
registered pilots from all over the state
who participated. They also had events for
the youngsters to try their hand at flying
RC aircraft. The club gave the youngsters
some model airplane kits, but Brian
neglected to say what kind.
Airplanes, airplanes, and more airplanes!

Tom Murphy, Fargo, North Dakota, won
the aerobatics category and People’s
Choice award with his biplane.
Fred Sanford, from the North Country
Model Controllers, Bemidji, Minnesota,
wrote about his club’s event. According to
Fred, this event is the largest Northern
Minnesota fly-in.
There were 41 registered pilots from as
far away as Fargo North Dakota and Rainy
River Ontario, Canada. The club also
sponsored a catered Saturday night dinner
for all the pilots.

banner. “The best $75 we ever spent!”
This Hawker Typhoon was built and
flown by Marv Sharp from Rainy River,
Ontario, Canada.

From Rice Lake, Wisconsin, I received a
report from Doug Zimmer of the Rice Lake
Model Club. The club has entered into a
program with the local schools to
introduce model aviation in conjunction
with a Reading Is Fundamental program.
The club members demonstrate and
explain the workings of a model,
explaining that to learn about models you
must be able to read.
Doug, along with members Kirby
Crawford and Jim Kleven, do the
presentations to five elementary schools in
the district. This is perfect way to get
youngsters interested model aviation and
aviation as a possible career.

In closing this month’s column, I want to
remind all District VII members that we do
have a forum set up on the Internet, and
it’s open to all District VII members. If
you have a question, suggestion, or
something of interest, don’t be bashful.
I do ask that common sense prevail and
to refrain from derogatory remarks or
profane language. The URL is
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AMA_D7/.
See you there.
Until next time, introduce a youngster to
our hobby. C.A.V.U.
