District News

This month I want to remind you that the AMA Homecoming is June 6–8 in Muncie, Indiana, and the Grand Event is also scheduled for June 6–8 in Des Moines, Iowa. I am planning to spend some time at each event with the thought of meeting as many District VII members as possible.

Indoor Fly-in — UNI-Dome

District VII’s new Associate Vice President (AVP), Jon McVay, supplied his first article. Jon reports that approximately 60 registered pilots gathered at the University of Northern Iowa at the UNI-Dome for an indoor fly-in on March 1–2, 2003. Pilots came from Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, Kansas, Louisiana, and Texas. Roughly 75% of the entrants were radio control aircraft and 25% were free flight. Bob Nelson was the contest director for the event.

National Record Flight

Bob Wilder, from the National Indoor Remote Aircraft Council (NIRAC), set a new national record by flying his aircraft for more than 20 minutes using only six 50 mAh cells. The aircraft weighed a total of 80 grams, including batteries. Jon performed one of his first duties as AVP by weighing and validating Wilder’s aircraft. Unfortunately, there is no picture of the record flight.

Rosedale International R/C Fliers — Annual Funfly

Jeanne Tubman, the event chairperson for the Rosedale International R/C Fliers of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, sent in the following report of the club’s annual funfly on August 24, 2002. Some attendees came from Goulais River, Canada, and as far as Florida. There were approximately 50 in all, including AMA past president and radio control modeler Don Lowe. Don is reported to have put on some flying demonstrations with his 1/3-scale Sukhoi.

Tri-Valley R/C Fliers — Club Shelter and Christmas Tree

As a change of pace from showing airplanes and flying, John Clark of the Tri-Valley R/C Fliers (TVRC) sent photos to show off the club shelter and a novel Christmas tree that was put together by Loren Belisle. John states the club has approximately 230 members and that only about 20 of them are hearty enough to brave the winter months to get together to fly. (They are a heck of a lot heartier than I am! — Bill)

Photo and Article Submission Guidelines

I’m sure there are a lot of club activities that go on in our district that other clubs would like to know about, and I keep asking for clubs to have someone send in photos and a brief article.

There are a few things that have to be included when sending in articles. One of the most important items is to place names with the faces in the pictures, and, of course, use the proper spelling of the names. Please make sure submissions are legible.

In the future when you send in pictures, include the names of people in the shots, and please do not write on the back of the picture. Use a Post-it note.

Closing

Until next time, see ya at the field. Fly safely, have fun, and introduce someone to our hobby. C.A.V.U.
