District VII Report
How many times have you seen safety measures used in and around the field where you fly? Quite often, I'm sure.
In my travels to various clubs in District VII, I have made it a point to see for myself what clubs actually are doing about safety. Sure, we all talk about it, but who practices it or even considers the AMA Safety Code?
Safety observations
I had some rude awakenings during some of my club visits. Common concerns included:
- No barriers of any kind to protect pilots on the flight line from an uncontrolled model.
- Nonflying visitors wandering in the pit area, including young children.
- No fire extinguishers or first-aid equipment present in case of fire or serious injury.
These are common-sense things we all must take into consideration while we enjoy our hobby/sport.
Youth outreach — Marshfield, WI (Mid-State Aeroguidance)
Jim Rasmussen from Marshfield, Wisconsin, sent in this report that exemplifies AMA’s goal of getting youngsters involved.
Jim reports that Dan Crump, vice president of the Mid-State Aeroguidance Club, organizes a mini aero camp for youngsters at Washington Elementary School each year. Dan says the attendees are eager to learn and ask tons of questions, which he thoroughly enjoys.
Great job, Dan!
Youth outreach — St. Clair, MI (River District RC Eagles)
Our second report comes from Jack De Lisle of the River District RC Eagles of St. Clair, Michigan. The club hosted the second annual gathering of first graders from Eddy Elementary School in St. Clair.
This year 80 students and their teachers were greeted by 19 members of the River District Eagles. The children were treated to all kinds of flying activities and each was given a balsa glider as a memento of their visit.
Barbara Carrell, a teacher and daughter of club member Bud Joachim, originated the idea a year ago. It was so successful they repeated it June 3–5, 2003.
It was difficult to tell who had the most fun — the club members or the students. Care to guess how many students will become modelers?
With clubs like Mid-State Aeroguidance and the River District RC Eagles leading the way, I hope other clubs in the district will get involved in introducing our hobby/sport to future modelers.
Until next time, fly safe, have fun, and introduce our hobby/sport to a youngster.
