District VII Report - 2004/03

Author: Bill Oberdieck

Edition: Model Aviation - 2004/03
Page Numbers: 171

March 2004 171
DURING the past few months there has
been concern regarding some issues of the
AMA Safety Code and the new Turbine
rulings.
At this point I don’t feel it is appropriate
to go into detail, but I would hasten to add
that during these past months many rumors
have been going around spreading quite a bit
of misinformation. This type of so-called
“spreading the word” does more harm than
good. It only adds to the confusion of the
actual issues.
I want to suggest to the readers of this
column that if you have any questions about
almost any subject relating to rules,
proposals, etc., that you contact your nearest
associate vice president (AVP). Their
addresses are listed in the column header.
If you have a problem contacting one of
them, then E-mail or call me. If you use Email,
please identify yourself by name and
AMA number.
I do get some anonymous E-mails, but
very few. The no-name ones I don’t answer.
I look at it this way: if a person doesn’t have
the courage to apply a name to the
correspondence, then I don’t feel that person
deserves an answer.
Okay, now for the good stuff. The following
two photos are from Bud Gorman.
Just to prove that there are AVPs in the
district out among the membership—and
flying, of course—this is a picture of Mark
Robatti (L) and Bud Gorman at the recent
Wings and Wheels at the Osceola Airport.
This shows Mark Robatti getting ready to
fire up Hazel Sig’s clipped-wing Cub. No
report whether he flew it or not. Both Mark
and Bud are AVPs in Minnesota.
Jon McVay, AVP from Iowa, sent in this
next photo of the gathering of modelers
showing all varieties of electric-powered
aircraft at E-Fli-owa 2003. Jon happens to
be into electrics.
This group shot shows the growing
interest electric-powered aircraft.
Dan Barrick, president of the ShantyTown
Model Airplane Club in Wisconsin, sent in
these shots from the club’s third annual flyin.
Dan said there were 41 pilots who
attended with as many as 80 aircraft.
These are some of the 41 attendees.
This 1/4-scale Nieuport is from a Balsa
USA kit. The airplane is owned and flown
by John Wich of Rinelander, Wisconsin.
The Toledo show is in April and I’ll be
there. Stop by the AMA booth if you would
like to meet with me. Someone will be able
to tell you where I am.
Until next time, fly safely, have fun, and
introduce a youngster to our wonderful
hobby/sport. C.A.V.U.
