THIS PAST SEPTEMBER I was
privileged to be able to attend the finish of
the reenactment of the 1920s National Air
Tour. Greg Herrick, a man from Minnesota
who heads up the Aviation Foundation of
America, put the tour together.
Greg himself owns roughly 40 of these
historic aircraft and has some of them in his
Golden Wings Museum north of
Minneapolis.
I thought some of these shots would be
of interest to readers of this column. For
additional information about the tour, there
is a Web site at www.nationalairtour.org.
Dan Roob, newsletter editor and secretary
of the Coulee Region Modelers, sent in these
pictures and report.
August 17, 2003 was the seventh annual
Mini-Airfest, which was held at La Crosse,
Wisconsin. Dan wrote that there were 32
pilots is attendance and one came all the
way from St.Thomas in the Virgin Islands!
The event had a full compliment of
various types of flying including helicopters,
3-D, and Electric Combat.
One half of the flightline with Bill Coleman
(far right) directing traffic.
Dan reported that the highlight of the
program was the young pilots’ glider flights.
Al Bushed, a general contractor in the area,
donated 120 gliders to visiting children older
than the age of eight.
Contest director Bob Harold instructs the
young fliers on the proper way to build
and launch their gliders.
Radio Control flying is not just for males.
Joy Jones, helped by Don Kunath, flew at
the Airfest and is enjoying the hobby
immensely.
Don Kunath from Elroy, Wisconsin, with
his 1/3-scale Miss Los Angeles. Don made
everything on this classic aircraft except
the engine by hand. The airplane weighs
52 pounds, has a Quadra 100 engine, and
is a beautiful flyer.
Although no admission or landing fees
were charged, the club did accept donations,
and nearly $1,000 was donated to the
Children’s Miracle Network.
This is a reminder that this is your column
and I can’t be everywhere at the same time.
If you have an event, please send in the
pictures and information to me at the
address in the header.
In the meantime, fly safely, have fun, and
introduce a youngster to our hobby.
