TIM ROLIFF, president of the Flying
Electrons, Inc., asked if the following
information could be included in my column
as a possible inspiration to other clubs on
how they get involved in community affairs.
“The Flying Electrons Inc., an RC club
in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, has
provided cash donations in excess of $2,000
to local organizations since August, 2003.
Our Charity Fly-In, an annual event for a
dozen years, has always had a portion of the
proceeds earmarked for charity.
“For the last several years, we have been
involved with the Menomonee Falls Boy
Scouts of America Troop 110 and have been
able to provide them with an annual cash
donation for the operation of the troop.
“Last year, in honor of a new member
and Menomonee Falls resident with Lou
Gehrig’s Disease who completed and
successfully flew his first RC aircraft, our
membership elected to make an a donation
to the Southeast Wisconsin Chapter of the
ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)
Association. The Boy Scouts and the ALS
Association each received $975 from the
Flying Electrons in 2003.”
Safety, safety, safety. Those of you who
read this column, you have read and heard
all of this before. You might as well get used
to it, because you will be hearing it and
seeing it more often.
As you know, I have instructed all the
District VII associate vice presidents
(AVPs) to get out and about with their new
titles and responsibilities as chief safety
officers. Their jobs will be to work with
CDs, safety officers, clubs, and the
membership to point out possible unsafe
conditions and offer suggestions and advice
to correct these conditions.
The AVPs will not be acting as
policemen but as instructors in the hope that
their actions will help reduce some of the
incidents that have happened in the past. The
point is to work together in a safe manner
and have fun.
No one likes to see someone get hurt so
it behooves us all to take notice of some of
the things we may have been doing unsafely.
Wilbert “Hutch” Hutchings sent in this
report from the Greater Detroit Soaring and
Hiking Society’s 34th annual snow fly.
Hutch reports that this event was
rescheduled from
February when
bad weather and
high winds were
uncooperative. As
a result, the
attendance was
down from what
was expected.
Hutch would
like to extend the
club’s sincere
thanks to the
Toledo Weak
Signals for the use of their fine facility in
order to have the event.
Unfortunately, Hutch did not include
captions for the pictures.
Ernie Varilone of the Radio Control Club
of Detroit (RCCD) sent this report about one
of the club members. RCCD has been in the
forefront of involvement in community
affairs. As a result, the club enjoys a great
relationship with the community.
Ernie wrote that member Chuck
Flemming is just one example of what
members can do. Chuck puts on a one-man
show for church libraries, Cub Scout troops,
and other organizations that show interest in
learning more about aeromodeling. Our
thanks to Chuck for his efforts. Our
hobby/sport becomes better for it.
There were 25 Scouts and adults at the
Faith Lutheran Church during one of
Chuck’s presentations.
Chuck’s seminar at the Centerline Library
in Centerline, Michigan.
You da man, Chuck!
Til next month, introduce a youngster to
our hobby. Remember, safety is no accident.
