Report

Safety, safety, safety. Those of you who read this column have read and heard all of this before. You might as well get used to it, because you will be hearing it and seeing it more often.

As you know, I have instructed all the District VII associate vice presidents (AVPs) to get out and about with their new titles and responsibilities as chief safety officers. Their jobs will be to work with contest directors, safety officers, clubs, and the membership to point out possible unsafe conditions and offer suggestions and advice to correct those conditions.

The AVPs will not act as policemen but as instructors, in the hope that their actions will help reduce some of the incidents that have happened in the past. The point is to work together in a safe manner and have fun. No one likes to see someone get hurt, so it behooves us all to take notice of some of the things we may have been doing unsafely.

Wilbert "Hutch" Hutchings sent in this report from the Greater Detroit Soaring and Hiking Society's 34th annual snow fly. Hutch reports that the event was rescheduled from February when bad weather and high winds were uncooperative. As a result, attendance was down from what was expected.

Hutch would like to extend the club's sincere thanks to the Toledo Weak Signals for the use of their fine facility for the event. Unfortunately, Hutch did not include captions for the pictures.

Ernie Varilone of the Radio Control Club of Detroit (RCCD) sent this report about one of the club's members. RCCD has been at the forefront of involvement in community affairs and, as a result, enjoys a great relationship with the community.

Ernie wrote that member Chuck Flemming is just one example of what members can do. Chuck puts on a one-man show for church libraries, Cub Scout troops, and other organizations interested in learning more about aeromodeling. Our thanks to Chuck for his efforts — our hobby/sport becomes better for it.

You da man, Chuck!

Till next month: introduce a youngster to our hobby. Remember, safety is no accident. C.A.V.U.
