District VII Report

I have some good news for readers: the District VII web site has acquired two dedicated volunteers, Larry Pittman and Ed Kincer. They have improved the site to include features that members can use and enjoy:

  • A forum for AMA-related questions
  • A section for building questions and discussions
  • Galleries to show pictures of members' latest airplanes
  • A for-sale department

The site is there for members to use. I hope more people will take advantage of the hard work that has gone into these improvements.

Seasonal note

As I write this, fall is here and—ugh—winter is fast approaching. I hope you all had a great flying season this past year and are getting ready for new projects for 2005. I managed to get in a few flights myself in between visiting events around the district, including the Grand Event and the EAA Convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. It’s been a busy season.

Events attended

Here are some of the events I attended this year:

  • Big Bird Fly-In — Aero R/C Club, Inc. of Flint, Michigan

The club is expanding: it acquired additional property and is putting up a pole barn for storage. The event was a two-day affair with approximately 65 registered pilots.

  • UFO Air Show — United Flying Organization

The club has a great field located on Michigan Department of Natural Resources property that the club leases; the site is a former landfill area. One unfortunate aspect of the lease is that the field is shut down for flying for a few weeks during hunting season.

  • Mid America Electric Fly-In — Midwest RC field, near Northville, Michigan

Keith Shaw served as contest director (CD) for this all-electric fly-in. While electrics are seen at local fields, the machines at this event demonstrated significant technical advancement in just a few short years. There were reportedly 90 registered pilots.

I’ve enjoyed getting out to meet members this season and had a great time. I hope you have too.

Till next time — introduce a youngster to aeromodeling, fly smart, and fly safely.
