District VII
Opening
I am proud to be an American and a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics.
That is an interesting opening and here's why. Where in this cockeyed world, other than in America, can one pursue any way of life—from schooling to employment to the freedom of enjoying myriad hobbies—without fear that it might be considered illegal? Think about that the next time you go to your club's flying field. And think about this as well: as a member of the AMA, you have the benefit of being part of an organization whose sole purpose is to continue to work to see that our hobby/sport continues to educate and involve youngsters in aviation through aeromodeling.
Dedication: Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Jefferson
I had the pleasure of attending a recent dedication, and needless to say, this was a special one.
The Detroit Aero Modelers (DAMs) of Detroit, Michigan, honored a very special member: Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Jefferson, formerly of the Tuskegee Airmen. The club named its flying site after him.
Club members, friends, and Lt. Col. Jefferson's family attended the event. After the raising of the American flag by a local color guard, it was presented to Lt. Col. Jefferson. The preceding pictures are worth a thousand words.
M.A.R.K.S. 50th Anniversary
Congratulations to the M.A.R.K.S. — Milwaukee Area Radio Kontrol Society — of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which celebrated its 50th anniversary. One of the original founders, Dario Brisighella, is also known for his expertise with Quadra engines.
After many years of struggling, the club finally found a local sod farm to fly from and still flies from the site. M.A.R.K.S. has a history of involvement in community activities that promote aeromodeling during Armed Forces Days, Career Days, and Youth Fair.
Closing
Space doesn't permit as many pictures or as much text as we would all like, so until next time: fly safely, have fun, and take a youngster to the field.
