178 MODEL AVIATION
I HAVE lectured in this column for more
eight years about how clubs can get
involved in bringing youngsters into our
hobby sport. Here is another example of
how it can be done with a little effort.
To top it off, this is the second
consecutive month that a club from
Wisconsin is leading the way! This is
AMA: the members and the clubs. Without
this type of participation and the strong
desire by individuals and clubs to see our
hobby/sport flourish, there wouldn’t be an
AMA.
Dave Brown, former AMA president,
spent 28 years promoting our hobby as a
builder, competitor, and, of course, as an
officer in AMA. I think District VII’s
Wisconsin has sent out a challenge to the
rest of the clubs. This is how we do things
in Wisconsin; what has your club done to
promote our hobby/sport?
There are 250 AMA clubs in District VII,
and two of them have already stepped up to
the plate this year. That leaves 248 more to
get involved in promoting our hobby.
Today’s youngsters are our future modelers.
Let District VII be the leader in promoting
our hobby to the rest of the country.
Rusty Billings of the Four Seasons RC
Flyers sent in this report about Hobby Day
at Wabeno Elementary School. Tony Baiach
and John Huntington also participated.
The event was held in the school gym.
There was enough room for 150 youngsters
to attend and to display and actually put on
demonstration flights with electric foamies.
Do I see potential park flyers in the pictures
above?
Dave Scott of the 1st U.S. R/C Flight
School was the pilot for the demonstration
flights. After the demo flight the youngsters
all received a glider to try their hands at
flying themselves. Needless to say, the gym
was full of gliders.
Rusty Billings is instructing two separate
Boy Scout Troops. Each troop has 14
youths, ages 14 to 16 and three from the
elementary school. I would also like to
mention that the Radio Control Club of
Detroit has one of the largest continuing
youth programs to my knowledge.
One last item: when sending reports to me,
please send either hard-copy photos or if
digital, the pictures must be a minimum of
300 dpi. If not, your report will not make it.
Remember the simple rules for
publishing They are the five Ws: who, what,
when, where, and why. Don’t worry about
grammar or spelling, we (in most cases) can
take care of that. One exception, please have
the correct spelling of any person named in
the report.
Until next time, get involved. Someone got
you involved once. Fly safely, have fun, and
promote our hobby. C.A.V.U.
