District VII Report - 2009/09

Many of our AMA‑chartered clubs have their own websites. These same clubs hold events throughout the year, whether they are fun‑flys or special occasions such as charities or fundraisers.

Contribute to the District Column

Putting pictures and reports about these events on your own website is great, but your members were there and saw what was going on. Why not share your event coverage with others by sending the information to place in our District VII column? It isn't hard to do.

Please send:

  • Hard‑copy photos or high‑resolution images on a CD.
  • A short report that answers who, what, when, where, and why.
  • If you send images by email, attach them as files of at least 300 dpi.

Your district vice presidents and associate vice presidents have a difficult time trying to catch all the events during our short flying season. Send your event coverage — it’s like bragging rights.

Wausau RC Sportsmen Club — Mall Show / TAG Program

Bob Weller, from the Wausau RC Sportsmen Club, sent this report. The club holds a mall show, as many other clubs do, but in Wausau’s case it is also tied into its Take Off And Grow (TAG) program.

The mall display shows a simulator and gives an overview of building from plans (scratch), kits, as well as ARF and R/C aircraft. Prospective members are given free coupons to use on a buddy‑box flight at a future TAG day at the field. That is a great way to get interested people to the field.

Warren Pope is one of the original six founders of the Wausau RC Sportsmen Club. The club provided an excellent selection of aircraft for the community to view and a chance to talk to the members.

Radio Control Club of Detroit (RCCD) — Kids Nights

From RCCD, Ken Sulkowski sent in shots that show what can be done with a little bit of effort. RCCD has been holding Kids Nights for the past six years or so. These get‑togethers are held two or three times a year.

The sessions start with Delta Dart building instructions followed by explanations about why an airplane flies. Then they move on to the buddy box for some serious flying. To top it off, everyone is treated to a barbecue.

Each youngster receives a Certificate of Achievement. Ken writes that when you see the smiles on the youngsters' faces, it makes the effort and work all worthwhile. RCCD has been a premier club in getting involved with youngsters — hopefully this short series of shots will spur other clubs to get involved.
