In Memoriam

Another sad day for our modeling community. Miles Reed — innovator, designer, builder, businessman, and one heck of a pilot — passed away last September. It’s a loss to all of us who knew him. Our sincere condolences to his family.

End of season and swap meets

It’s drawing close to the end of our flying season here in the Midwest. It’s time to start watching for the swap meets to be published and getting ready for the holiday season. Hopefully everyone had a great season with plenty of your favorite type of flying. How about getting an early start on checking out your gear to see if anything needs replacing or repairing?

Northern Aces at EAA AirVenture (July 2009)

July 2009, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, was the site of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture and where the Northern Aces Air Show Team assembled to again do KidVenture.

This is part of the EAA gathering where youngsters can get an opportunity to experience what flying an airplane is all about, even if it is a small model. It is by no means a small undertaking for the Northern Aces. It takes a considerable amount of time and energy to obtain donated airplanes to be used during the six days of the event. This year’s operation included both an outdoor and an indoor site to accommodate all the youngsters who participated.

Team members and roles included:

  • Bill Lund (reporter/photographer)
  • Mike Haller (instructor)
  • Dave Flick (instructor)
  • Bill Kvindlog (instructor)
  • Gary Doeren (team manager)
  • Mark Enderby (coordinator)

Let the pictures tell some of the story — see the article on page 40.

Cleveland Air Show — short-notice assist

Recently, a sponsored air show team had to cancel its appearance at the Cleveland Air Show, a major event over the Labor Day weekend. A last-minute call went out to the Northern Aces Air Show Team from Green Bay, Wisconsin.

With less than two weeks to get people and gear together, it seemed it might not happen. But because of the dedication of the members, it did. They packed up and drove from Green Bay to Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland, Ohio. Congratulations to the team for a job well done on short notice!

Until next time, fly safely, have fun, and get yourself and your club involved in promoting our wonderful hobby. C.A.V.U.
