RACE OVER RANTOUL 2006: On June
22-25, the Unlimited Scale Racing
Association (USRA), an AMA Special
Interest Group, launched the 2006 Giant
Scale Racing season at Rantoul, Illinois. The
was event was hosted by Horizon Hobbies.
There were pilots and crewmembers
from all across the United States, including
Hawaii, and there were 10 pilots, eight
crewmembers, and a number of family
members from Texas. There were 57
entries—up from last year—and AMA
District VIII was well represented.
Five rounds of racing for each class—
Dominator, Formula I, Formula I GT, and
Unlimited—were held on Friday and
Saturday. Points accumulated from these
heat races determined who would be eligible
for the Gold Race in each class and toward
championship points for the series.
On Saturday night, participants and
guests attended the banquet, which was held
at Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum. The
attendees dined under the wings of historic
aircraft.
On Sunday, the five aircraft in each class
with the top points battled it out in the Gold
Races. Placing from Texas were: Roger
Bailey, Missouri City, third place
Dominator; Jeff Powell, Midlothian, second
place Formula I; and Fred French, Bertram,
first place Unlimited.

USRA Racing—try it, you’ll like it, and
remember, until we meet in Ohio, go fast,
turn left, fly straight and true.
Thank you Oscar Slaughter and Lynda
French for the submission of this column.
