Please note below the new date for the
Southwestern Aeromodeling Conference,
October 3 and 4, 2003.
If you, your company, your Special
Interest Group, or AMA chartered club
would be interested in establishing a
commercial trade show display at the
October 2003 event, please contact me at the
above address. I will provide you with all
applications and registration information.
These spaces are going fast and we will
be sold out very soon. Act now if you want
to be an exhibitor at this event!
The membership category of AMA Leader
Member has the responsibility of
consideration of any AMA Bylaws changes
or amendments. The possibility exists that
during 2003-2004 this group of members
will have submitted to them a vote for
formally updating the bylaws of AMA.
To seek direct and personal feedback of
this bylaws-adoption procedure, I am
starting a formal information distribution list
via E-mail. This list will not be a discussion
group. It will provide ongoing information
in a timely manner to all Leader Members.
Feedback to me personally will be
solicited from each Leader Member who has
an E-mail address on file with his or her
AMA membership. Any Leader Member
will have the option of voluntarily being
removed from the distribution of
information list. This list will be limited to
Leader Members who reside within AMA
District VIII (TX, NM, OK, AR, and LA).
If you seek to establish Leader Member
classification in the AMA, please contact
AMA Headquarters in Muncie, Indiana or
download a Leader Member application
from its Web site.
The following information is quoted from
the Brazoria County Modelers Association
newsletter, Jim Whiteside, editor.
“Being friendly at the field.
“Encourage visitors to take a closer look
at what you’re flying. Invite them to tour the
pit area and to meet the members. Most
visitors are apprehensive about being at the
field because they might feel like they are
intruding.
“It is the sight, sound, and excitement that
drew them into watching us fly. Remember,
any visitor may become a member.
“When a new pilot is on the buddy box,
consider postponing your flight until they
finish. Allow fledgling pilots the opportunity
to listen to their engine and to focus on their
model and to hear their instructor. (Most of
the time they will put in one flight and then
sit it out until the jitters subside.)
“We are involved in a people sport.
People join our sport because they like being
around people. They also love to talk about
airplanes. They can see airplanes just about
anywhere, but people join our club to be
around other like-minded persons.”
The Academy of Model Aeronautics—the
glue that bonds model aircraft enthusiasts
together!
These photographs are a compilation of
activities sent by Scott Kuhns, club
president, and Don Hopper of the
Albuquerque (NM) Radio Control Club.
This activity was one of many held by the
club in 2002. They also had kids day, mall
shows, and static displays at the opening of
new hobby shops locally.
Both Don and Scott want me to remind
you that though the population of New
Mexico is sparse, there is a lot of modeling
activity on the west side of AMA District
VIII.
This photograph is of Don’s Fw 190. It has
an 85-inch wingspan, retracts, a Brison
3.2 cubic-inch engine, and a 20 x 10-inch
propeller. It weighs 22 pounds.
At an Albuquerque air show the club had a
noon “walk of airplanes” where flying
ceases and all spectators are allowed to
get up close and personal with the models.
Who can resist the excitement of a
Mustang P-51? These three were flown at
a gathering in Albuquerque.
Alas, occasionally bad things do happen
to “good” model airplanes. This Corsair
was featured in full-color in a local
newspaper just prior to this mishap.
This Edge 540 is really hard to look at.
Flying, fun, and fellowship! Dr. Sandy
Frank, representing you to the AMA
Executive Council.
Note: For a listing of all district volunteer
workers please consult the previous issue of
Model Aviation or the above Web address.
