PLEASE NOTE the new date for the
Southwestern Aeromodeling Conference:
October 3-4, 2003. If you, your company,
your special-interest group, or AMA charter
club are interested in establishing a
commercial trade-show display at the
October 2003 event, please contact me at the
above address. I will provide you with all
applications and registration information.
These spaces are going fast and we will be
sold out very soon, so act now if you want to
be an exhibitor at this event!
The Temple Aeromodelers held a Santa
Pal/Ronald McDonald Toy Fly-In at Mc
Greggor Park, Moffatt, Texas last
December 1. The entry fee was one new,
unwrapped toy. All proceeds went to the
Santa Pal/Ronald McDonald house program.
While I was there, I experienced a new,
fun model—the Pizza Box Flyer. For more
information, do an Internet search on Pizza
Box Flyer or start at http://mypage.yhti.net/
~dmcdnld/pizzabox.htm.
The following are examples of Pizza Box
Flyers. Try one! You will like it.
The CD (above right) was B.W. Ponder.
Shown above is the father and daughter
team of Cindy and Bernie Gill with their
Eagle 2 at the Santa Pal/Ronald McDonald
Toy Fly-In with their Eagle 2. The weather
cooperated and all had a great time.
What will get 233 miles per gallon of
gasoline? A model flying in the Fort Bend
Radio Control (RC) Club’s El Paso, Texasto-
Rosenberg, Texas Cross Country Flight,
held Monday, September 23, 2002.
The crew consisted of Jim Rose, Don
Haun, Darrell Haun, Peter Jacobson, Dean
Umbarger, and Bob Nelson.
At full load, the model had a gross weight
of 27 pounds. Fuel weighed eight pounds.
They planned for at least eight hours of flight
time with a full charge each leg of the flight.
The crew members have all stated that
they had a great time. They want to thank all
who helped. You did a great job and for more
information about this cross-country flight,
consult www.scaleaero.com/fortbend.htm.

The following two photos were taken by
Doug “Chief” Powell at the Albuquerque RC
Club’s (ARCC) Christmas party. Chief is
District VIII’s RC Contest Coordinator and
Chairman of the new RC Combat Contest
Board.
Shown above is Scott Kuhns, ARCC club
president, being inducted into the AMA
District VIII Dirty Dozen Society for
services rendered to AMA members in the
New Mexico region.
The highest award AMA bestows is that of
membership in the Grade of Fellow. An
AMA Fellow honor is awarded for lifelong,
dedicated services to AMA and its
membership and programs. A Life
Membership to AMA is included with the
honor.
Few know of this ultimate recognition
and status award and very few ever reach it.
Our very own District VIII Webmaster, Bill
Lee, on the nomination and recommendation
of the AMA Executive Director, Joyce
Hager, was recently chosen for this
prestigious award.
During the weekend of December 8,
2002 at the ARCC Christmas party, I
surprised Bill with the presentation of this
award. In my 45-plus years of association
with AMA, it was one of the happiest things
that I have ever done.
During this new year, share a toast with
other modelers and say thanks for such
dedicated volunteers as the newest AMA
Fellow, our very own Bill Lee! Well done!
Flying, fun, and fellowship! Dr. Sandy
Frank, your representative to the AMA
Council (Board of Directors).
Note: For a listing of all district volunteer
workers please consult the previous issue of
Model Aviation or the above Web address.
