The following was sent to me by Emmett R.
Fry of Maumelle, Arkansas.
“Model aviation legend, icon, and allaround
nice guy, H.A. Thomas has been
inducted into the Arkansas Aviation Hall of
Fame.
For more than 80 years, H.A. has been an
active designer, builder, and flier of all kinds
of models, including his famous Spitfire,
shown here at a club meet. He was inducted
into the Model Aviation Hall of Fame in
1988.”
It is a tradition throughout much of the South
to hold a gathering and eat black-eyed peas
on New Years Day. Doing so is supposed to
create luck throughout the coming year.
Several AMA-chartered clubs throughout
the region participated in club-sponsored
flying and black-eyed-peas festivities. Below
are photographs from one of these gatherings,
undoubtedly assuring one and all good luck
in the year 2003!
Thomas J. Niebuhr from Blue Ridge flies at
Hobby Park with the Dallas Control Line
club, participated in the club’s New Years
black-eyed peas festivities.
Stephen C. Jeansonne from Arlington,
Texas at the New Years Day gathering.

Years Day black-eyed peas festivities

The Academy of Model Aeronautics—the
glue that bonds model aircraft enthusiasts
together!
