District VIII Report - 2003/11

Author: Dr. Sandy Frank

Edition: Model Aviation - 2003/11
Page Numbers: 155

PLEASE NOTE the new date for the
Southwestern Aeromodeling Conference:
October 3-4, 2003. All AMA members are
cordially invited to attend this event.
Keynote speakers will include Wes
DeCou, AMA flying site assistance
coordinator for the Western region, and Carl
Maroney, AMA’s special services director.
They will speak Friday, October 3, 2003,
from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. when the trade
show will open to the public. Other seminars,
workshops, and symposia will include ones
for club and newsletter editors (Saturday
around noon), the AMA History/Biography
program with Norm Rosenstock, the AMA
historian, and a safety seminar for model
aircraft. (Times are yet to be scheduled.)
This will be the largest gathering of model
aircraft enthusiasts in the region—it will be a
modeling trade show of major proportions, a
swap meet, a modeling auction, and a static
display of models. It will be the largest
indoor flying activity within the region. It
will be a place to interact and network with
other enthusiasts from throughout the nation
and internationally!
All of this is made available by the
volunteer workers from within District VIII.
It is all available for the modest admission of
$5 per day, with all profits going to AMA
projects within AMA District VIII.
Mark your calendar and please plan to
attend the Southwestern Aeromodeling
Conference, October 3-4, 2003. I promise
you will have an excellent experience at this
tremendous gathering of model aircraft
enthusiasts.
The Academy of Model Aeronautics is the
glue that bonds model aircraft enthusiasts
together!
AMA’s Executive Council election will be
very soon for five council seats including that
of District VIII. Adult AMA members—
nearly 19,000—who reside within Texas,
New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and
Louisiana will be sent a ballot. To save AMA
postage expenses, this ballot is enclosed
within the 2004 membership renewal
paperwork.
It is not required that you submit your
2004 membership renewal at the same time
as your ballot. Your ballot must be sent to a
separate location to be properly processed
and counted. Each year thousands of AMA
election ballots are improperly sent to AMA
Headquarters enclosed within the
membership renewal.
Some have told me that they thought that
they were saving AMA postage by enclosing
their ballot within their membership renewal
paperwork. This is not the case. Your vote
must be sent to a separate address where
independent auditors tally the votes.
Please use the postage-paid postcard to
cast your ballot; mark it and drop in into the
mail. It is preaddressed and will get to the
auditors.
If you enclose your ballot within your
renewal paperwork and send it to AMA
Headquarters in Muncie, Indiana, it will not
be counted and will be destroyed.
The 2004-2006 term of office for the
AMA Executive Council will set the course
which AMA takes into the 21st century. Your
input via your vote is needed and important!
Elsewhere you will be seeing the political
rhetoric and campaign promises of all the
candidates in this election. Please read them
to help you decide for whom to vote.
Historically, only 10% to 12% of the
eligible membership votes in these elections.
Many don’t bother! It is by your vote that you
can express how much you care about AMA,
its mission, goals, and objectives.
The above photo shows the dedication at the
Wilbur Wright birthplace museum monument
to honor the centennial of powered, mancarrying
flight.
When you visit the National Model
Aviation Museum in Muncie, Indiana,
consider visiting the Wilbur Wright
Birthplace museum located nearby.
Flying, fun, and fellowship! Thank you, Dr.
Sandy Frank, your representative to the AMA
Executive Council (Board of Directors). I am
available 24 x 7 x 365 to assist you!
