Bill Lee (R) from Chandler, Texas, is the
president of the National Control Line
Racing Association (NCLRA). He is
presenting the NCLRA 2003 Nats High Point
award to Mike Greb of Sulphur Springs,
Texas. Mike had a good Nats, taking both
Racing and Carrier High Point awards.
Gene Hempel of Austin, Texas, received his
Model Aviation Hall of Fame certificate. He
is a previous District VIII vice president and
still active doing AMA volunteer work
serving on the AMA Safety Committee.
On January 4, while driving through to
attend the AMA Convention 2004 (formerly
the IMS show), I visited a midwinter Pylon
event in El Paso, Texas. Mark Briggs was
the contest director (E-mail:
[email protected].
This was a Quickie 500 racing series
event. Others scheduled in this series will be
March 28, June 27, and September 26, 2004.
The organizers ran a modified AMA 424
event on a two-pylon course and O.S. Max
.40 LA Class and ThunderTiger Pro .40
Class. First-time racers, novice, and experts
were welcome. It was open to all current
AMA members.
While at the AMA Convention I visited the
Trick R/C (Zagi) company (938 Victoria
Ave., Venice CA 90291; E mail:
[email protected]; Web site: www.zagi.com/).
Thanks for the tour and Southern
California hospitality, Zod.
The following photos are from the AMA
Convention 2004. AMA-sponsored
aeromodeling conventions are also the glue
that bonds aeromodelers together!
Above (center) is Rich Hanson, vice
president of District X, discussing AMA
politics with some West Coast members.
Rob Kurek, AMA Director of Publications,
discusses the publication with a member.
With a 10-space display at the convention
was Grand Wing Servo (GWS) USA, the
new USA distributions company in
Torrence, California, for GWS Taiwan.
Seen left center is the general manager for
GWS USA, Mr. Goldberg, and at the far
right is the GWS president and CEO, Mr.
H.W. Lin of Taiwan. His gracious
hospitality while at the AMA Convention
will long be appreciated and remembered.
Business at an AMA Convention too
happens. Below is the AMA Education
Committee meeting held at the convention.
Longtime modeler Tom Tilley (L) with
Western Region Flying Site Coordinator
Wes De Cou. Tom is president of the
Sunlakes Model Airplane Club and he has
enlisted Wes’ help to locate a new flying
field as the club’s current one is
scheduled to become condominiums.
While returning from the convention, I
visited with the AMA Western Regional
Flying Site Assistance coordinator, Wes De
Cou in Phoenix, Arizona.
We visited nearly all flying fields and
hobby shops in the region and discussed
AMA programs nonstop. For any problems,
questions, or concerns about flying site
matters west of the Mississippi, contact Wes
at 202 W. Desert Flower Ln., Phoenix AZ
