OCTOBER 9–14, 2005 — The Society of Antique Modelers (SAM) Championships returned to El Dorado Dry Lake near Boulder City, Nevada, 20 miles south of Las Vegas. Unlike the 2001 SAM Champs, this year's event was blessed with great weather and the lake remained dry. This was truly an international event; modelers came from as far away as Europe, Australia, and the British Isles.
Some new features at this year's event included CL modelers flying Vintage Old-Time Stunt (pre-1953) and Classic CL Stunt (post-1952). For the Nostalgia fliers, A1/A2 Glider was added.
The logo for the 2005 Champs was an image of Hall of Fame member Sal Taibi launching his Brooklyn Dodger, and a Dodger-only RC event was flown in his honor. Sal was available throughout the week to sign autographs.
Congratulations to the Society of Antique Modelers and CDs Ted Firster, Bob Oslan, Bob Angus, Bob Beecroft, and Eric Rule for a successful and enjoyable event.
Till next time, keep 'em safe and keep 'em fly'n.

Located less than a mile from one of San Diego's most popular attractions—SeaWorld—the Silent Electric Flyers (SEFSD) of San Diego, CA maintain an electric-only field that clearly demonstrates how the advent of electric models has revived the concept of an urban-area RC flying site.
Gathering at the local flying site on a beautiful Saturday morning is an aeromodeling tradition and is commonplace at the SEFSD club field in San Diego's Mission Bay Park.
Pedro Brantuas of San Diego demonstrates that electric airplanes are no slouches. His RC electric is a Com ARF Extra 2x2 with a NeuMotors 1515/2Y and a 6.7:1 gearbox, and it is fully aerobatic.
Mike Blott of Poway, California, created an exceptional electric RC model of the Blue Angels in diamond formation. In flight, you'd swear it was the famous show team passing in review.
