Aeromodeling news — Hawaii

From District X associate vice president (AVP) Wayne Hamada:

Hi. I'm Mark Timares, president of the Hawaii County R/C Club based in Hilo, Hawaii. I'm a new president and relatively new to AMA. The following are some photos of our club's activities from the past year, including an exhibit at the University of Hawaii at Hilo's Ellison Onizuka Science Day.

The Ellison Onizuka Science Day was held on January 28, 2006, at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. This event observed the 20th anniversary of the Challenger disaster. Members of the club demonstrated indoor electric helicopters, conducted a static display, and provided attendees the opportunity to experience RC flying through the use of a flight simulator. A link to the University's website, http://astroday.net/OSD2006.html, features photos from the event.

For the past year our club has been working on obtaining, clearing, and building a runway at our new field. We lost the ability to fly at our old field at the Shipman Business Park; however, the company was kind enough to lease us an overgrown 30-acre abandoned post–World War II radar site.

We've been hand-clearing the site and building the runway by hand. It's been a tremendous amount of work and we're just starting to be able to fly off of a very short cinder (soon-to-be grass) runway.

Our club is small and the work's been done on a shoestring budget. Nevertheless, we are making substantial progress through the hard work and dedication of our members.

Aloha!

Puunene, Maui — MRCM 2006 Air Show

Puunene, Hawaii: The Maui RC Flyers' (MRCM) 2006 Air Show enjoyed record crowds, with an estimated 600 attendees, including more than 100 youth. The air show was held on Saturday, February 11, 2006, at the Nelson Boteilho Memorial Field. A full-scale fly-by of a Stemme motor glider, piloted by Pacific Helicopters' Tom Hauptman, augmented the 60 model airplanes and 10 model helicopters. Three jet-turbine-powered aircraft, piloted by Ian Kinnear, Duke Chung, and Bill DeRego, provided most of Maui with its first experience of the incredible sights, sounds, and smells that only 130-mph-plus jet models have to offer.

T-34 scale aircraft three-airplane pylon races, and Dave Cowan's Zero dogfighting with 13-year-old Owen Baldwin's P-51, proved to be crowd favorites. Cowan also towed Nick Czars' two-meter glider aloft, demonstrating the possibility of silent flight. Most of MRCM's members flew aerobatics accompanied by music to the thrill of the crowd, including Rusty Medeiros' spectacular 3-D aerobatic Raptor 90 helicopter performance. This performance featured loops, rolls, tail slides, and inverted flight, and provided the finale for the show.

Parachute and candy drops entertained the younger members of the audience, and frequent training flights enabled spectators to become participants. Prior to taking the controls of the actual models, training was provided on computer flight simulators. MRCM's president Eric Chase said the club benefited tremendously from the event in terms of funds raised for continuing educational activities, attracting new members, and expanding community support.

The community supported the event with generous donations from local businesses, including:

  • Blue Hawaiian Helicopters
  • DJ Shark in the Water
  • Dolphin Galleries
  • Goodyear Kahului
  • Maui Aviators
  • Piiholo Ranch
  • Yorman's Restaurant

MRCM provides flight training throughout the year, including two youth groups, and has numerous events designed to teach the building and flying of model aircraft.

Till next time ... Keep 'em safe and Keep 'em fly'n.
