(RaSCaLs) model airplane club include (back

and John Donaldson.
John Donaldson sent in this report about the
Reno Sparks Control Liners (RaSCaLs).
“Members of the RaSCaLs model airplane
club staged an air show in support of the Tune
In To Kids Fair at Reno’s ldlewild Park on
April 8, 2006. We were assigned to a softball
field which we shared with a group of RC
fliers. Weather was chilly, winds zero, gusting
to two.
“The RaSCaLs flew from 10 a.m. until 1
p.m. when the wind came up and converted
intrepid birdmen into chickens. We
entertained many kids and their parents, had
zero crashes, and no damaged airplanes.
“Approximately 5,000 parents and
children attended the fair which included
exhibits designed to get kids away from their
computer games and into more constructive
sports. The fair officials seemed pleased and
indicated they would very much appreciate
our participation again in next year’s fair.”
On February 18, 2006, the America’s Cup
Banquet was again held in Wasco, California,
near the world-renowned Lost Hills flying
site. The annual banquet honoring the 2005
America’s Cup points winners was held in
conjunction with the Max-Men’s 14 Rounder
Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI)
FF contest.
The 2005 points winners were F1A, Mike
McKeever; F1B, Eddie Vanlandingham; F1C,
Randy Archer; F1G, Tom Ioerger; F1H, Brian
VanNest; F1J, Tom Kerr; F1P, Cody Secor
Jr.; and F1Q, Vic
Nippert.
At this year’s
America’s Cup
Banquet, George
Batiuk of San Luis
Obispo, California,
was presented the
2006 Mentorship
Award. As
commented by Jon
Davis of
Albuquerque, New
Mexico, “George has
been a longtime
advocate for the Junior fliers. He’s served as
the team manager for five Junior teams and
throughout the years has helped many of our
Junior members. George has earned and well
deserves this recognition.”
The 2006 USA Junior FF Team was recognized
and seated in a place of honor at Saturday
night’s America’s Cup Banquet.
This year’s America’s Cup Banquet also
saw the presentation of the FAI Alphonse
Penaud Diplôme to Robert “Bob” White for
his lifetime achievements in FAI World
Championship competition. Unfortunately,
Bob passed away last November after
succumbing to a virus. The award was
accepted in his loving memory by his wife
Jean.
The weather was brisk and thunderstorms
threatened; however, the participants in the
annual Max-Men 14 Rounder were not
dissuaded. Round One kicked off bright and
early Saturday morning.
Roger Simpson (L), world-class F1C Power
competitor and past District X member (now
of Athens, Texas) makes last-minute
adjustments before round five of the 14
Rounder. On the right, F1B Wakefield World
Cup Champion Alex Andriukov, from Simi
Valley, California, was one of the honorees at
this year’s banquet for his achievements in the
World Cup circuit.
Jim Lueken, also from Simi Valley, keeps his
eye on an approaching thunderstorm and
waits for the perfect opportunity to launch his
F1B attempt.
Jim Parker of North Hills, California, perennial
organizer of the America’s Cup points
competition spent much of his time during the
two-day event helping the Junior participants
in F1A tow-line glider.
Till next time ... Keep ’em safe and Keep ’em
fly’n.
