THE SAN DIEGO COUNTY Association
of Model Clubs held its 21st Annual
Association Swap Meet at historic Balboa
Park in San Diego, California, on Saturday,
July 8, 2006. The event’s perennial organizer
Don Madison (above, L) kept things running
smoothly with the help of Jim Luster (back)
and Frank Gagliardi.
This year’s Association Swap Meet drew
70 sellers and scores of buyers. Proceeds of
the event are used to help fund the
Association’s efforts in supporting the
aeromodelers and modeling clubs of San
Diego County.
On June 10-11, Red Bluff, California, and
the Sacramento River were again the site for
the annual Northern California Regional
Float Fly hosted by the Redding Area
Miniature Aircraft Club (RAMAC) and the
Northern California Radio Controller
Unlimited Flyers (NCRCUF). Mike Brown
of the NCRCUF club was the CD for the
2006 float fly and filed this report.
Velda Crotty was our banquet cook. She
took pictures of the pilots and their airplanes
and put them on the cakes—and yes, they
were edible!
Rudy Caseras holding his beautiful Cessna
Skylane on floats.
Charlie Hoisington paddled his way into the
hearts of many of the modelers by rescuing
downed airplanes in his kayak. It proved to
be a very efficient way of retrieving airplanes
landing close to shore.
“RVs were lined up early Thursday
morning to get a favorite spot and find one
they did. We had 61 paid campers on site
and more pilots came from local towns just
to fly. I couldn’t have ordered better weather;
the temperatures were never too high, there
was hardly any wind, and all weekend long
everybody flew as much as they wanted.
“I would like to thank all the volunteers.
They make this the professional, smoothly
run event what it is. I couldn’t do it without
them. I also want to thank the sponsors who
were very generous—especially our two
local hobby shops.”
Jim Giffin (center), IMAA president and
District X associate vice president, came by
with his wife Maureen. With Jim are pilots
Tyler Armstrong, Dave Sullivan, and Ed
Sutter.
Last summer Oscar Weingart of Riverside,
California, shared with us a report on his
progress in building a Balsa USA 1/3-scale
Ercoupe on floats.
On June 30, he flew the model at the
Lake Perris State Recreation Area. Four
successful landings and takeoffs were made
using a Zenoah G-45 at 7800 rpm with a
20 x 8 Zinger wood
propeller.
Oscar’s Ercoupe weighs 35 pounds on its Sea
Commander 64-inch Edo floats and was
modeled after a full-scale Ercoupe, N87405.
Till next time … Keep’em safe and
Keep’em fly’n.
