District X Clubs Reach Out in Their Communities
Catalina RC Modelers — Foothills Mall, Tucson, Arizona
Club member Richard Saggese sent the following report.
On September 2, 2006, the Catalina RC Modelers held a mall show at the Foothills Mall in Tucson, Arizona. The one-day show was well received. We generated much interest and will most likely gain new members for the club as well as the AMA.
Five members staffed the first five-hour shift and five others took the afternoon and evening shift. Eighteen airplanes were presented, ranging from a small foamy to a 40% Edge.
Bob Dupre brought four of his helicopters, varying in size from a large .60 to a micro electric. He flew the micro helicopter in the center of our display area many times to the delight of spectators. Bob also brought a computer with a flight-simulator program that was constantly in use by young and old alike.
Steve Meyer, our newsletter editor, did a great job producing a flyer to hand out to people interested in our club. It included a map to our field, pictures of the field, and the names and telephone numbers of club officials.
Club member Randy Wegner brought a television with a built-in CD player. He had various CDs, including The Tucson Shootout and a Joe Nall fly-in. Many spectators enjoyed watching these for quite a while.
Bayside R/C Club — Fremont, California
Will Sievert of the Bayside R/C Club in Fremont, California, sent in a report on the city’s 50th anniversary and the club’s participation in the event.
The city of Fremont asked the Bayside R/C Club to help celebrate the city’s 50th year because our flying field is within the city’s borders. This was a perfect opportunity to display our presence to the citizens of Fremont. The celebration took place in the city’s large park.
A valiant effort by club member and event director Frank Goto, a few club members, and city employees produced a less-than-perfect runway carved out on an open lot at the park.
We performed a few trainer activities, but flyover space was limited. Club instructor Doug Field gave one of those lessons with a fixed-wing aircraft. Dave Neves provided preliminary ground school to a boy before he flew a helicopter.
Two young club members, Brandon Kontorinis and Brian Linderman, performed incredible acrobatics with a 1/3-scale Yak and a helicopter. The smaller aircraft and electric foamies attracted much attention from visitors.
We had a large static display of a wide variety of models, a table for construction of Delta Darts, and a raffle for an RTF airplane with a free one-year club membership. A huge supply of MA magazines went home with many visitors.
Because visitors had limited opportunity to fly at the celebration, we distributed coupons redeemable at our flying field at a later date for a flight with our instructors. We hope this will introduce the Bayside R/C Club to the city of Fremont and increase our membership.
Till next time... Keep 'em safe and keep 'em flyin'.
