District X - 2008/08

The monthly meeting of the Weedwacker Aero Squadron on April 1 provided the backdrop for presenting Don Madison of San Diego, California, AMA's prestigious Distinguished Service Award. Don has served the modeling community of San Diego County for decades and has been the go-to guy for everything from flying site assistance to community events, to helping dozens of model aviation widows deal with their loss and equitably disposing of their spouse's modeling treasure trove. I am honored and privileged to call Don one of my dearest friends.

Presentations and highlights

  • April 26 — The Miramar Radio Control Flyers (MRCF) of San Diego, in cooperation with the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum on Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, displayed model airplanes beside the museum's collection as a membership drive for MRCF and the museum. It was a special treat to see impressive models intermingled with historic military aircraft. Although located on a restricted-access base, the museum is accessible to the public and houses some rarely seen aircraft.
