District X - 2010/09

FLYING SITE Improvement Grants are
awarded each year to clubs that make
improvements to their flying fields or
during their efforts to build new ones. This
year six District X clubs were awarded
these grants.
As your district vice president, I
thought it important to see these grants
were delivered in person. Obviously I
cannot do everything alone and because we
have a great group of associate vice
presidents (AVPs), I asked if they would
like to also do the honors. Four AVPs and
I are scheduled to present these awards.
Following are AVP Greg Clemensen’s
words about the presentation of one of
those grant checks.
“For many years, the Remote
Possibilities RC Club of St. George, Utah,
had the privilege of using an asphalted,
abandoned airstrip outside of town for its
flying site. After years of planning, the city
began developing that site into its new,
full-scale regional airport. The club began
working with the City of St. George
officers to find a new radio control flying
site.
“In the fall of 2008 The Remote
Possibilities RC Club made the first flight
at its new flying field. The new site
occupies property belonging to the State of
Utah School Trust Lands, and the City of
St. George.
“After securing long-term agreements
with the agencies, the club got to work,
spending thousands of man hours and
$65,000 to build the new, top-notch
facility. With lots of effort and some luck,
between losing the old site and flying at
the new site, they were only out of a place
to fly for three days.
“As with many projects of this
magnitude, the flying site has several areas
of improvement remaining. The next step
is extending the runway another 400 feet to
accommodate the landing of larger aircraft
and jets. When this project is finished the
runway will be 1,100-feet long and 50-feet
wide, 700 feet in asphalt. The estimated
cost of this runway extension is $45,000
due to the massive amount of earth work,
and bridging a wash.
“Even with the expanding membership
of the club, the cost of the runway
extension proved to be a financial
stumbling block. The club applied for and
was awarded a Flying Site Improvement
Grant from the Academy of Model
Aeronautics. The check was hand
delivered on June 19, to an exuberant
group of club members at the flying field
by District X AVP Greg Clemensen.
“According to club president, Carl
Waldvogel, ‘This money will allow us to
complete the runway extension resulting in
our 1000-plus-foot airstrip. With the
runway extension complete we can host an
event that includes turbine-powered jets
and any other aircraft that requires longer
takeoff and landing distances.
“We are impressed that Greg drove
three hours to deliver this check, and are
grateful to the AMA for its generosity in
approving the grant.”
Thanks, Greg. I hope you, the members
of District X, believe as I do that we need
personal communication between the
clubs, members, and the volunteer officers
of District X, including myself and all of
my AVPs. Whenever any of us can, we
will make the effort to attend in person,
events of importance to you, the
membership of District X.
