DISTRICT X Associate Vice President
(AVP) Darlene Frederick shared these
photos of the 2002 FAI Scale Team. Darlene
served as manager for the team as they
competed this past July in the 2002 Scale
World Championships in Tillsonburg,
Ontario, Canada. The Radio Control (RC)
team placed eighth overall and the Control
Line (CL) team placed fourth.
Pictured above is Darlene posing with the
RC team members Steve Sauger (L), Hal
Parenti, and Bob Benjamin.
These are the CL competitors Dale
Campbell, Jack Sheeks, and Steve Ashby.
When modelers in the Los Angeles area
think of the Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area
in Van Nuys, California, most think of
Apollo Field with its popular RC and CL
facilities. However, a little-known area in
the park is a place called the “Knoll” just
west of the Encino Golf Course.
There on a peaceful Saturday morning
can be found a mix of modelers quietly
enjoying the pleasure of their hand-launched
rubber, CO2, and catapult-powered models.
This blend of exquisite miniature aircraft
can be found gracefully floating above the
grassy knoll as their pilots quietly camp at
the edge of the field to enjoy the day and the
company of their fellow modelers.
Pictured above is Roy Hanson of
Chatsworth, California, releasing his CO2-
powered Piper PA-17.
Howard “Hi” Johnson was inducted into the
Model Aviation Hall of Fame. On October
13, the award was presented to Lynn
Johnson, son of Hi Johnson, in loving
memory of his father and his life-long
contribution to model aviation.
This prestigious award was presented at
the Valley Circle Burners Second Annual Hi
Johnson Memorial Stunt Classic.
Pictured above is Clarence Lee (L) of
Sunland, California, presenting the award
to Hi’s son Lynn.
This is a 1959 Lucias Johnson painting of
Hi Johnson with his CL US-captured
Stuka Bomber.
Lynn Johnson grasps the control handle
and takes to the sky as he remembers the
days he and his dad, Hi Johnson, shared
their love of this great hobby.
October 19, the Coachelle Valley RC club
(CVRC) opened its flying site to the
surrounding community and celebrated the
opening of their new aeromodeling complex
in the Coachelle Valley just east of Indio CA.
The club took this opportunity to thank
members of the community for their support
and individuals within the club who were
instrumental in creating this “Field of
Dreams.”
Located at the entrance of the CVRC field,
this bronze statue by Larry Eaks greets
visitors entering the flying site.
Pictured are Dennis Poe (L), Ron
Goodspeed, Dan Metz (president),
Kathleen Carraasco, daughter of Sam
Jones, and Doug Poe.

president of
the CVRC,

’Till next time ... Keep ’em safe and Keep
’em fly’n.
