NOVEMBER 16, the First Weedwacker
Aerosquadron of Santee, California hosted
the San Diego County Association of Model
Club’s (SDCAMC) annual Veterans Day
Warbird Fly-in. This event was originally
scheduled for Saturday, November 9, but
was postponed due to an early winter storm.
The postponement and bad weather
didn’t dampen the spirits of this hearty
group as dozens of modelers and hundreds
of spectators turned out a week later to join
in the Veterans Day celebration.
1914 Lee-Richards No. 3, alias The Flying
Toilet Seat. This 1/4-scale model was built
by Don Westergren of San Diego and is
powered by a 1.2 cubic-inch Saito.
Club president Ted O’Fallin staffs the
bullhorn and the flightline as he monitors
the flight operations and safety of the
Veterans Day Fly-in.
Ted O’Fallin/Jack Burns performed a
parachute drop with this beautiful replica
of the Experimental Aircraft Association’s
(EAA) Stinson JR chase airplane used in
the 50th Anniversary Lindbergh
Commemorative Tour.
Frank Gagliardi, past president of the
SDCAMC, did a great job in handling the
announcer’s duties for the annual event.
Frank is not only a great modeler, but is
also a professional musician and supplied
the inspirational music for the Veterans
Day presentation.
Don Madison, a founding member of the
SDCAMC, and Lance Edmunson spent the
day behind the grill as the Association
and the Weedwacker Aerosquadron fed
hundreds of spectators who came out to
enjoy the day.
During the midday presentation, military
servicemen and woman, past and present,
were invited onto the field and honored
for their contributions to our freedom and
our country as the military theme songs
for each branch of service were played.
The Veterans Day event provided the
opportunity to recognize the efforts of the
SDCAMC. The club received AMA’s Award
of Excellence for its outstanding
contributions toward furthering model
aviation and acquiring and preserving
model flying sites in San Diego County.
Receiving the award are District X
Associate Vice President Don Gulihur (L),
Don Madison, SDCAMC president Chuck
Grim, Gary Thompson, John Hood, Frank
Gagliardi, and Ted O’Fallin.
Similarly, the members of the First
Weedwacker Aerosquadron were
recognized for their commitment to safety,
aeromodeling education, and community
involvement and were presented with
AMA’s Gold Leader Club award. Receiving
this award are Weedwacker board
members Lance Edmunson (L), Walt
Wilson, Ted O’Fallin, Scott Skerlock, and
Manuel Ainza.
Members of the Silent Electric Flyers of
San Diego gave the crowd a taste of
things to come with Bill Knoll’s electricpowered,
ducted-fan Marine Cougar.
Pictured are Chuck Grim (L), Bill, and
Wayne Walker.
’Till next time ... Keep ’em safe and Keep
’em fly’n.
