San Diego County Association of Model Clubs — Swap Meet
July 19 — Don Madison of San Diego, California, registered roughly 117 sellers and oversaw more than 700 buyers and spectators at the San Diego County Association of Model Clubs’ Annual Swap Meet. This is Don’s ninth year organizing the event. Thanks, Don, for all your hard work.
The San Diego County Association of Model Clubs conducts two major community events each year:
- The Swap Meet at Balboa Park
- An aeromodeling static display in support of the San Diego Aerospace Museum
Aeromodeling Static Display
This year’s aeromodeling display marks the sixth year for the event. It was held in the museum foyer on Saturday, July 26.
Palomar RC Flyers — 2003 Flights of Fancy
Associate Vice President (AVP) Don Gulihur of Santee, California provided the following report on the Palomar RC Flyers’ 2003 Flights of Fancy.
On July 12 the Palomar Radio Control (RC) Flyers, in association with the San Diego Aerospace Museum, held its annual Flights of Fancy, a summer youth program sponsored by the museum. Boys and girls from throughout San Diego County gathered at Johnson Field to learn about model aviation. The Palomar RC Flyers host this event each year at the club’s local flying site near San Marcos, California, in north San Diego County.
This year’s event was under the direction of Curtis Kitteringham and was a huge success. Fifty-two youngsters attended the summer program, making this fourth annual event the club’s largest. Before all the batteries ran out, 186 flights were logged.
Once the RC flights were completed, the youngsters did some model building and competed in a Delta Dart contest.
Flights of Fancy is held the first Saturday following the Fourth of July, and the club turns out to make it a day for the kids to remember. A great time was had by all, and many of the kids were heard to say they knew exactly what they wanted this year for their birthday and Christmas.
Northern California RC Unlimited Flyers (NCRCUF)
The Northern California RC Unlimited Flyers (NCRCUF) are based in Anderson, California, south of Redding. The club’s flying site is adjacent to the Sacramento River with a gorgeous view of Lassen Peak to the east and Mt. Shasta to the northwest.
At the NCRCUF July meeting, club president Michael Brown and treasurer Don Lafferty presented enlarged reproductions of two checks — one to the NCRCUF and one to the Redding Area Miniature Aircraft Club. The two Redding-area clubs jointly host the Northern California Regional Float Fly held each June at the Red Bluff Recreation Area. The checks represent an even split of the proceeds from the hugely successful 2003 event.
Closing
Family, friends, food, and flyin' ... is there any better way to spend a summer evening? Till next time ... keep 'em safe and keep 'em flyin'.
