Paul Stober from San Francisco with his
Nelson .40 Strong Arm. Stunning climb!
Bill Morez of Santa Barbara, California,
reported three days of great Free Flight
(FF) weather at the San Diego Orbiteers’
45th annual Labor Day National Cup FF
Bonanza at Lost Hills. Carl Goldberg would
have been proud of Bill’s old Zipper.
HARBOR SOARING SOCIETY Adopt-ASchool
Program: submitted by Fred Hesse of
Huntington Beach, California.
“The Harbor Soaring Society (HSS) of
Costa Mesa, California, currently teaches
classes in model aviation at the Boys and
Girls Club as well as several local schools in
Huntington Valley. Based on Bob Hunt’s
article in the January 2003 issue of Model
Aviation, the HSS Adopt-A-School Program
has been upgraded to focus on Radio Control
(RC) aircraft.
“We have a four-step program made up of
ground school, flight school, ARF (almost
ready-to-fly) aircraft assembly, and kit
building. The first two steps are at no cost to
the students.
“The classes begin with four hours of
ground school (during which each student
receives a free AMA membership) followed
by several hours of computerized flight
simulator experience (Great Planes
RealFlight R/C Simulator). Flight school is
conducted using gliders and small electricpowered
training airplanes donated by Hobby
People and club members.
“Students are given sufficient flying
instruction to comfortably solo and classes
are conducted in aircraft, radio, and groundsupport
equipment. Our aircraft assembly
class is for the more enthusiastic students
who want to have their own RC airplane.
“The fourth step involves kit building
with encouragement and training to modify
or design an original aircraft.
“The Costa Mesa Daily Pilot featured our
club and flying field and captured this photo
of Jake Wirtz from Talbert Middle School.”

The Hemet Model Masters first annual
Memorial Jay “Madman” Yates Semiscale
Rally, by Associate Vice President Jerry
Neuberger.
“The Hemet Model Masters held its first
Memorial Jay “Madman” Yates Semiscale
Rally at Domenigoni field September 20-21,
2003, in Hemet, California. Contest director
Rick Waterman and his assistant Larry Metz,
along with the many members of the Model
Masters conducted a first-class event that was
thoroughly enjoyed by all.
“The Jay Yates Semiscale Rally is open to
any airplane that is scaled after a full-scale
airplane. Scale fidelity is not a big issue,
however the majority of the airplanes were
nicely done and there were a few “squint
scale” airplanes in attendance. Watching the
B-19 and B-24 flying in formation was just
awesome.
“The highlight of the rally was when
Charlie Mackey flew Jay’s Burt Rutandesigned
Quickie. I was honored when
Charlie offered me the sticks.
“Madman Yates is sorely missed by the
Model Masters and the Semiscale Rally is a
fitting tribute to his the memory. I can’t wait
until next year.”

Domenigoni field in Hemet, California.
Brian Tucker represented Airtronics during
the inaugural event and provided noontime
demonstrations with his RC helicopters.
Dick Skoglund’s B-19 is a Scale flyer and a
beautiful airplane.
Corey Dail with his Stafford B-24. Corey
flies nothing but Scale aircraft. The B-19
and B-24 flew formation and it was
fantastic.
Eric Shewchuk’s scratch-built Predator
UAV. Eric drew up the plans from threeviews
that appeared in Model Airplane
News. Eric built the fiberglass molds for
the fuselage and vacuumed the remaining
parts. The wings are foam.
Till next time... Keep ’em safe and Keep ’em
fly’n.
