The Northern Utah Radio Control Aircraft
Club (NURCAC) held its annual club
banquet at the Ogden airport restaurant,
January 17, 2004. Club president David
Johnson emceed the event and is pictured
presenting the club’s annual Broken-Tail
Award before a packed house of club
members, family, and friends.
Ogden Utah’s Jet Turbine CD Harry
Webster posed at the NURCAC banquet
with his SimJet-powered Kangaroo II
(Roo II).
David Snellie displayed his magnificent
static-scale 1903 Wright Flyer at the
NURCAC banquet.
Gene Martindale’s Sport .40 rests
precariously atop the telephone lines
running adjacent to the NURCAC flying
site. Unbelievably, the model came to rest
on top of the lines 20 feet above the ground
after Gene inadvertently lost control of the
aircraft. The model was retrieved with no
damage to the communications equipment
and virtually no damage to the aircraft!
THE SPEEDWORLD R/C FLYERS’ 12th
Annual Winterfest was held January 17-18,
2004, in Surprise, Arizona. The following
article was submitted by Donald Rau, the
newsletter editor for the club.
“Saturday, January 17, started out cold
and windy for SpeedWorld’s 12th Winterfest
Q-500 Pylon Race, but the enthusiasm of the
pilots and course workers wasn’t hampered
by the weather. Everyone was ready and
rarin’ to go.
“There were 63 pilots registered for this
event, with 11 in the 424/APRA class, and 52
in the 428 Q-500 class. These pilots came
from 11 different states and Canada.
“Roughly 26 SpeedWorld course workers
manned the numerous tasks required to run
these races. After the pilots’ meeting and
safety briefing, the races got underway.
“A break for lunch was called so everyone
got a chance to enjoy the Flight Line Café’s
great food: hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot
dogs, and the special—chicken breast,
prepared by Ted and Joan Sitarz, our new
café managers.
“During the lunch break we were treated
to some great flying by ‘Geronimo’ Vidales,
who flew his Eurofighter jet. His wife
Barbara backed him up. Seeing this beautiful
jet airplane flying over our field was great. It
was the first jet to fly at SpeedWorld and it
was flown so very well. Thanks, Geronimo!
“The rest of the afternoon went extremely
well and the second day of racing started
early Sunday morning; the first heat took off
at 8:31. All went well on Sunday with only a
few mishaps and crashes.
“The newly updated electronic racing
equipment used for the first time, performed
flawlessly on both days. We can thank the
designers, Stan Douglas, Len Gilmore, and
Jim Allen, and all of the others who had a
hand in putting together this state-of-the-art
equipment. It is said to be the best in the
country if not the world.
“These three designers are planning
improvements to our equipment for the Gold
Cup Races in February. No wonder so many
Pylon racers love coming to SpeedWorld.
Sixy-three pilots and their callers
participated in the 2004 SpeedWorld R/C
Flyers’ 12th Annual Winterfest.
The success of any event is measured in
large part by the workers who make the
event possible. Pictured are the
SpeedWorld club members and volunteers
who made the Winterfest a huge success.
“The last heat came across the finish line
at 3 p.m. and then the announcement of the
winners and picture taking commenced.
“Everyone was pleased to see young
Tanner Pacini beat the Q-500 (428) Junior
Class fastest time record twice during the
weekend. The old record was 1.11. He beat it
first with a 1.10 and then with a 1.09 time.
Congratulations, Tanner! Look for more from
this talented young man in the future.
“For more details regarding the results see
www.nmpra.org/events_results.
“The SpeedWorld R/C Flyers also host
the JR Gold Cup Pylon Series each year in
February. The 2004 Gold Cup had 70 preentrees
from five foreign countries and 21
different states. To find out more about the
SpeedWorld R/C Flyers, check us out on the
Web at www.Speedworldrcf.com.”
Till next time ... Keep ’em safe and Keep
’em fly’n.
