November 2004 159
On July 10, 2004, representatives from the
local member clubs turned out in force to
support the San Diego County
Association of Model Clubs’ (SDCAMC)
annual static display at the San Diego
Aerospace Museum.
Bob Middleton’s beautiful OV-10 Bronco
was presented in the familiar red-andwhite
California Department of Forestry
fire-fighting painted scheme. Bob’s
Bronco was flown at the Fallbrook
Avocado Days in May and was also
displayed at the Ramona Air Show in June.
Ray Menegus’ 1/4-scale SPAD with exact
scale fittings, wires, paint, and decals was
one of the many fabulous scale aircraft on
display at the entrance to the museum. A
SuperTigre 3250 powers the SPAD that
won Judges’ Choice and Peoples’ Choice
trophies at the Weedwackers’ Scale Fly-In.
Jim McNerney’s T-33/TV-2, built by Mark
Taylor, was a real attention-getter and was
one of several jet aircraft at the SDCAMC
annual event. Jim intends to fly it initially
in primer. If the aircraft survives, it will
receive the full treatment with panels and
decals from Jerry Caudel and paint by
Frank Gagliardi.
CD Ken Shapiro reported that the
International Miniature Aircraft
Association’s (IMAA) District X West Coast
Festival was a complete success. The
regional IMAA event was sponsored by
IMAA Chapter 679 and hosted by the
Central California Model Flyers.
The IMAA event drew 222 registered pilots
and 289 inspected aircraft. This year’s
festival was supported by 23 commercial
vendors and there were approximately 175
RVs parked on site. The Saturday evening
barbeque was held at the Castle Air
Museum, serving 183 hungry people.
A big thrill at the 2004 West Coast Festival
was the fly-by of a full-scale P-51 chased
by a Me-109 with another P-51 on its tail.
Chapter 679 did its usual great job. A
special thanks goes out to Scott Malta, the
airport manager and fellow RC pilot.
Mike Stoner, CD for the East Bay Radio
Controllers’ (EBRC) 29th Annual Fun & Sun
International Miniature Aerobatic Club
(IMAC) event, sent in the following report
about the July 10-11, 2004 contest.
“IMAC historian Glenn Carter tells me
that 2004 is IMAC’s 30th birthday and that
my home club, EBRC, has held Scale
Aerobatic contests for 29 of them. Amazing!
“IMAC Scale Aerobatics was pretty much
started in the Bay Area by past and present
members of the EBRC. It’s really an honor to
carry on the tradition that has been pioneered
by our own club and its members.
“The 29th Annual Fun & Sun event had
30 registered pilots, and the contest attracted
pilots from as far away as Riverside and
Bakersfield, California, and Reno, Nevada.
“Kent Nogy dropped in on Saturday to
spectate and lend a hand to any of the junior
pilots. Thanks, Kent! Saturday temperatures
were in the high 80s and beautiful. Sunday
warmed up to roughly 99 and by all measures
the contest was a great success.
“We had excellent sponsorship for this
IMAC Points Contest. I want to recognize
and thank all our contest sponsors: Craig
Grieve (CD Concepts); Desert Aircraft;
Don’s Hobby Shop; HobbyTown USA; Peak
Electronics (Sirius Chargers); Quest
Engineering & Development (Smart-Fly);
Shawn Berkheimer (R/C Blimp Productions);
Stan’s Fiber Tech; SWB Mfg. Inc.; and Wild
Hare RC for their generous support.
“Thank you to all the EBRC club
members who came, pitched in, and
supported the event. I’m looking forward to
number 30 in 2005.”
Till next time, Keep ’em safe and Keep ’em
fly’n.
